Best buy customs?

Anyone who is looking for a great deal on custom in terms of price and especially service, should check out Greg Lightfoot. I ordered an LCC from him on January 16 and I got today. About five weeks quicker than the five month turn around he mentions on his website. To top it off, I had recently changed my order from the Suppressor to the LCC. Greg Lightfoot gives incredible service compared to what I have heard about from other equally well known makers.

Michael Snody, Neil Blackwood, Jerome Anders, Ed Caffrey EBK, Audra Draper, Rob Simonich, John Fitch and on and on and on!

Too many intangibles to say what is a best buy - only the person making the acquisition can determine if a particular knife is a best buy because one man's diamond is another man's piece of coal. Many makers offer good value at a particular price point for a particular type/style of knife but it is only a best buy if it is a knife you desire. A knife costing thousands can be as good a buy as a knife costing $150 if they both provide what you desire.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Bob Dozier yet...surely he has to fit somewhere in a discussion of this nature.

Well Coonskinner if you had not mentioned Bob Dozier I was all set to do so myself. Value and Bob Dozier sorta so in hand. I have an Agent fixed blade and just received a folder called the Buckhunter. Many of Bob's fixed blades are in the under $200.00 category and are as well made and finished as knives costing more. The folders are a bit pricier, but are well executed. The Buckhunter is built for the longhaul and should be around when I am long gone. Micarta and D-2 on the fixed blades along with titanium and D-2 on the folders represent quite a value, especially coming from Bob Dozier!

The best buy I've got in the last few yrs.has got to be the Chimera model 3 by D.C.Munroe.Even with the increase in price a few months ago its still the best IMHO.The materials are titanium, talonite.Fit and finish is great. There is attention to detail that is rarely seen in a folder under $500.The extra thick liner lock almost makes it seem like an intregal lock.

I agree with the mention of Dozier - small fixed blades made of D2 in the best Kydex in the business for as little as 150$? Hard to beat.

Also Hossom presents the BEST value IMHO - a fighter like his for as little as 400$? You can’t find a better deal anywhere.

Both are upstanding gentlemen as well and a joy to do business with.

Jones Brothers. Bob Dozier. For high end, grab on to Andrew McLurkin. This incredible young man is headed for the pinnacle in custom knife making. Stop by table #18B at Blade and tell me it isn't so.

Certainly for as well known as he is, and with respect to "real user knives", Bob Dozier has to be one of the best values around. I just got a K-1 model from him (for a pic see http://www.dozierknives.com/ under "hunting knives". "The K-1 Utility" is at the top of the list), and I've had a great deal of fun with it already doing everything from slicing tape, rope, fruit, and filleting a few fish. I bought this particular model because the other Dozier I have, his "professional hunter" sold exclusively (I believe) through A.G. Russel, was so specialized I hesitated to use it for anything other than skinning. It says "I'll skin an elephant if you want, but you have to preserve me for that purpose." The K-1, by contrast, says "use me, use me," so I do!

For superior file work and good variety of knives it's hard to beat Mr. Andre de Villiers of S. Africa. You can buy directly or via Knifeart.com etc. Great value from a well established maker.

Ok this guy, Mr. Russell Milligan, just won "best new maker" award at the Oregon Knife Show, and his prices are half of what they should be while he builds up his clientele. The only way to reach him is by phone or mail:

Try this for a curve ball . . . when thinking of best buys in custom knives look outside of the USA to countries whose exchange rate is weaker than the Dollar . . .

Here in South Africa you can pick up a linerlocker, with mosiac damascus bolsters, ivory handles, titanium liners, and contrasting satin and mirror polished ATS-34 blade and fabulous fit & finish for $250. A bird & trout knife of ATS-34 with stainless bolsters, seamless fit, burgundy micarta scales with your favourite fly inlaid for $150 or less!

All this to superior Guild standards of workmanship. You can't get much better buying than that!

Hilton,

How about some websites and recommendations for South African makers

Sid . . . Try www.kgsa.co.za . . . not the best website to navigate, but look for knifemakers like Nico Pelzer, Lourens Prinsloo, George Beechey, Andre Thorburn, George Baartman, and Graham Sparks and drop them a line . . . and if you're looking for colour scrimshaw go no further than Sharon Burger.
