I bought a computer from BEST BUY a few weeks back and was having some problems posting pics here on BF. I went back to the store where I purchased it and talked to a Geek Squad guy. He began trying to help me but the BEST BUY internet service wouldn't allow us to access BF because it was a prohibited website because it involved "weapons". I had the guy call the manager and he said that it was out of his hands because the policy was determined by the corporate office and he could not override it.
I went to Office Depot and even though they didn't sell the computer they fixed me up in about 10 minutes and only charged me $10. They even went as far as to explain to me how to do it myself for free but I had them do it anyway because it was well worth $10 to me.
I came home and called 1-888-BEST BUY and talked to customer service. They took my complaint and said that someone from management would contact me in 5-10 working days. Its been about 14 working days and I haven't heard a word for them. I called back and they said all they could do was make another report.
Needless to say I will never spend another cent at BEST BUY. From now on Office Depot will get my business unless another place (except BEST BUY) has a better deal.
Just wanted to share this with you guys.

Dude, the corporate firewall usually comes from an outside vendor. They have a stock set of site types that they block (e.g. porn, fringe politics, bandwidth / broadband hogs like YouTube, etc.) Sometimes they include "weapons" on that list. I would not, by virtue of this experience, say that Best Buy is not knife friendly. At worst, they are knife agnostic and happened to also subscribe to an outside service which listed this as a "weapons" site.

Had they seen a knife clipped to your pocket and immediately told you to leave or call the cops then I'd be way more inclined to agree.

You are better off not shopping at Best Buy anyway but are you sure it was blocked for "weapons" and not some of the other adult material on the site?

Geek squad is overpriced anyways! Find a teenage family member or neighbor... they grew up on computers and they'll appreciate that $10 a whole lot more!

i am have been a PC tech for almost 20 years and i will tell EVERYONE never use geek squad EVER!!

Um... I'm not really seeing what the problem is. It's not like they escorted you out the door because you had a knife clipped to your pocket or anything. It's a computer firewall; if they don't want their employees looking at BF, that's their business. It's no different than prohibiting employees from visiting a swimsuit model forum or whatever.

My computer at work won't let me visit YouTube or Netflix, but it doesn't mean I'm going to quit my job and stand in front of the place with a picket sign.

Totaly miss leading title. Also not a big deal. What's with the resent border line troll thread titles? The one about ZT being dead in general right now is even more ridiculous.

And btw, price wise you can always do significantly better buying on line. I would never buy anything at a best buy unless I planned on returning it. Not because they are anti knife but because it would be like flushing money down the toilet. This should be what the OP is truly concerned about.

Excuse me, but I agree with Darrin on this. He had a problem with a product they sold. They couldn't help him with a technical question because of a political/philosophical stance imbedded in their corporate policies.

I can understand a company blocking off-topic sites to their employees. But not interfering with customer service for a buyer.

This is exactly what should be written in the complaint to the execs at their office. Maybe that will help them to understand better.

Same here. The only thing the Geek Squad has ever done for us is replace the panel on a 40" TV which was covered under warranty. As far as computer stuff goes, networking, etc I would not use their service.

Go to a local person for your repairs. Geek squad isn't going to give you good service or value for your money.

Interesting stuff. You can almost always assume if someone is on your computer they are looking at every photo (and documents) you have. I'm not saying it's right but, it's so easy for someone to do and relatively easy to get away with. Simple password encryption should deter them. You have be pretty naive to think anyone with easy access to personal stuff is not going to look at it. The leaving the phone in the bathroom case is on a whole other level. Both cases are invasions of privacy but, this one takes the cake.

As to the OPs situation...your over reacting a bit. Filters like that are set-up with very vague filters to catch anything that might be considered dangerous or inappropriate. Knives fall into that category. Do I think it's correct to group knives into that category? No, but that's another conversation that probably isn't worth discussing to another knife fan.

Thanks Esav, I purchased it there so I went back there for help. I tried to explain to the CS rep. that a store manager should be able to make a judgement call and override that policy (within reason) in order to help a customer with a problem.
I'm a knifemaker not a computer tech. so I'm not up on all the procedures or where to get the best deal. However, I didn't just blindly go to BEST BUY and purchase a computer. I shopped around and on that particular day they had the best deal of anywhere I looked, locally or on the net. They only had one left and I got what I needed for $225 so I'm satisfied with the price but not the service. In the future, I'll gladly pay a few more bucks at a place where I can get some service. I just thought I would pass along my experience. If I offended anybody, I apologize.

I was filling in as a manager at a local auto dealership while the manager was on vacation and his secretary had to go to a funeral. While there I tried to log onto bladeforums and got the same thing where it was blocked so best buy is not by far the only place that does this. I personally have no problem with it and do not see it as blade unfriendly.

Best Buy sucks in all aspects of customer service. They need to stop hiring hipsters who think they are too good to work there. And whoever was the idiot who decided to refuse service to customers over a website like this deserves to be punched in the face a few times.
