Best Camp Knife ?

My current camp combo is my Ontario RAT-7 & RAT-3. I did carry a BK-7 & Cold Steel kukri machete. I still carry the kukri from time to time but it stays on my ATV most of the time . I have a Tramontina 14" bolo machete & ColdSteel Shovel on the way !

I'm really liking my KaBar Heavy Bowie. I think their Camp Knife would make a good choice too. Both are very hearty, meaty blades with a lot of power.

If you need one of these to cut your steak, then you're cooking you meat way too long ;) The kabar heavy's and the Ontario SP5 seem like amazing knives for their category and price point.

I can only afford the cheaper cuts of steak so a RAT 7 sounds about right !!!:D

I love those knives bro and nobody ever mentions them on here, can you dig up some pics ?;)

I actually prefer something larger for hiking- because for me, hiking means I'm not carrying much and I may end up in a survival type situation (needing to make shelter, etc).

But, if I'm camping- meaning I brought a tent, etc. and I can only have one, my Bark River NorthStar (or maybe a Fox River when I get one). I'm kind of shocked I'm the first to mention a Barkie. I think this is a great size for food prep and the kind of stuff you run into around camp.

Usually, I would like something a little bigger and a little smaller- say a Camp Tramp (excellent score on that!) and a Dozier Gentleman's knife or possibly my Active Duty now that I finally got one.

I would say a CampTramp is exactly the type of knife I had in mind, the clue is in the name of the knife I guess !!!:D

pitdog,

I will take some pics of my "chopper" when I get home from over here the end of January. It is carried in a deep leather pouch sheath. It really is a comfortable knife to use and carry, for its size. I use it to clear brush around our little ranch as well.

The term Camp knife makes me feel a lot less nervous Ron:D

I look forward to the pics !!!

Ha! I like that! I guess I refer to it as that, because I mostly use it for chopping! It still has some of the teeth pattern from the rasp left over after forging the blade. I am fortunate that I was able to get it.

Elen,

when reffering to a "camp knife: it is a term to describe something that would be the american version of a leuko ( I think I spelled that right ) oh well... just a large knife for heavy tasks to accompany a smaller one.

The leuku is pretty much a replacement for a hatchet, intended for chopping the bushes and very small trees that grow in Lapland for firewood - a hatchet would be too cumbersome for that purpose. They do use it for skinning and boning and other working on meat, too. It's a Lappish thing, though, and isn't as commonly used outside Lapland as a hatchet, since the larger trees of the south are more easily handled with a hatchet.

I'm still a little confused. :D I leave food preparation for small to medium size knives, which are much lighter and quicker. That only leaves chopping wood or self-defense with a larger knife, and that I'd leave to a hatchet or a larger knife, like Fällkniven A1, Ranger RD7 or anything like that. They may be a little large, but the weight never bothered me - I'm not into the ultralight thing.

yeah the priciples of a camp knife is as you described it's a large knife for chopping brush clearing and heavy work I guess it could be used defensively...also for use witha baton if your into that....it's a large knife blad 7+ inches for people who prefer not to carry an axe....Does that sound about right guys??

Yup !!! So what's yours Riley ?

All this discussion about this and that. It's all so simple - Fallkniven F1. Small enough yet large enough. Sharp enough. Holds an edge. A value at $90 or less. Military grade. Nearly indestructible.

There are a couple other similarly sized knives that would be similarly good but the F1 is very hard to beat. I don't like bigger blades but they make two larger versions along the same lines, the S1 and A1.

I carry a RD6 in an over-the-shoulder rig I put together out of some old horse tack. I have a variety of smaller knives for the lighter work-lately it has been my Skookum Bush Tool, razor sharp and ready for use at a moment's notice! I like the solidness of the bigger knife; it can handle anything I what it to do, but a bit cumbersome for food prep. I'm not much into axes, I guess.

Camp knife to me is the knife used in deer camp or fish camp.
A really butch kitchen knife that is at home in the cook tent, kitchen butcher pole or at the wood stove...not for making kindling but for splitting the kindling to make small stuff to get the fire going.

But that's me :D

I would say my camp knife would definitly be my Rat-7. I think it's the right size and not to heavy for me for just about everything. If I can't get it to work for certain smaller projects, I would go for my LM wave.

tough call. ranger assault knife, himalayan imports baby ganga ram special villager, scrap yard d-mutt, mora anything, victorinox anything bigger than a classic, buck 110 or 889, spyderco anything, and i like to keep it under $150 which knocks out almost all my busse clan blades. i should get an rtak2.
