Hey everyone, new to the forums
and planning a survival camping trip this summer. Will have tents, but well only use those until the makeshift shelter is put up. I was looking into knives, and did quite alot of reasearch lately, and the blades that are on the table the RC-4, the Cold-Steel Bushman, and any mora. Looking for highquality steel, carbon and such. KNives will be abused, but batoning and splitting wood is meant for an axe, and i like to keep it that way. i plan on taking more than 1 knife, and all knives should be under 100 (together).Open to suggestions, and thanks in advance.

Consider Becker. BK2 is my favorite camp knife by a long shot.

ESEE (formerly RAT) RC-4 is a great choice, so is the BK2.

If you want stainless steel in a great blade get a Fallkniven F1. They still can be had around your strike price.

$100 should be able to get you a good bush trio if you shop around. Hatchet, SAK and a good fixed blade...

Condor Hudson Bay for your big knife, mora clipper for general bushcraft knife, and SAK of your choice just because you should always have a SAK. All together around $70-$80

The Cabela's Alaskan Guide Series version of the Buck Vanguard, with S30V steel blade is real nice. $100 with the rubber handle or $113 for the wood. I love mine, it's the perfect size for camping/hunting.

Are you thinking about trying out several knives to find out what their strengths/weaknesses are? If so a large SAK with scissors and wood saw ($20 -$30), Mora 546 ($10 -$15), Opinel No.8 (@ $15), and a Condor Bushcrafter, or Rodan, or similar (@ $25). This will give you experience with different knife types, steels, blade profiles and tangs. Of course the RC-4 or CS Bushcrafter could substitute for the Condor.

i was looking into something like the condor rodan? 4-5 inches, i have a LM Wave for a multi-tool and No doubt, i want a mora.

the rodan or the bushcraft or bushlore all condor that are 4-5 inch. Most mora's also run that size.

+1 to the Condor Hudson Bay, if you are looking for a big knife, I picked mine up brand new for $30 shipped.

What do you think of more traditional designs? How about a Helle Egen? Or a Scandinavian Puukko? Check out Ragweedforge he has a pretty cool selection of those types.

If you don't plan on battoning I don't think full tang is necesary, maybe also look at the Blackjack 125, I really like mine

You might go to a second hand store and see if you can find a used Old Hickory butcher knife or boning knife for a couple of bucks. Remember a sharpener if you are going to put your knife or knives through a lot.

+ 1 for any Mora (I suggest the Companion) and would rather choose a stainless steel one, especially if ur trip is going to last a few days.
+ 1 for any SAK with a preference for the large ones (Soldier, Trekker and so on) and preferrably with the saw.
If u have to carry tents and so on, and unless u are going into a jungle or very thick woods, I would not carry anything more than that since I believe it would be unnecessary load. If u plan on processing a lot of wood (for fire/cooking or shelter) I would recommend a folding saw, it is much lighter than an axe (or hatchet, or chopper) and will do all the job u need.

Excellent recommendations. It is easy to get loaded down and when tired realize much of it is just not necessary.

If you're not going to baton or do anything like that then IMO you should throw out any recomendation that includes a knife over 1/8" thick. A mora and a SAK would come in under $40 bucks and will outperform any 3/16" or 1/4" thick knife recomended above.

What exactly are you planning on doing with this knife? Is this for shelter construction, cutting, etc? How much chopping does it need to do. What about food prep, or cord cutting?

Making shelter, cutting a buttload of 550 chord, food prep, an all around knife that doesnt need to baton, but there might be a little chopping involved.. no splitting wood either. Plan on ditching the tents in the car after a decent Shelter is built. So far, a mora, and a SAK or maybe my good ol' leatherman wave.. I have 3 different grainsize sharpening stones, and plan on using a TUF-CLOTH or something of the sort if the steel is prone to rusting.. But id love a D2, or 1095, but i wouldnt skip a knife it it wasnt that. any opinions on the bushman? ive heard very good, and very bad things about it..
