Hello Folks,

Can anyone recommend a hard use/ abuse knife,
which is easy to carry, bomb-solid and can withstand repeated abuse.
It is for a survival tour, and I will also be carrying a small wood axe, and my favourite folder, still doubting between Small AFCK or Spyderco endura. Special features are not neccesairy, as I also carry a victorinox swiss-tool. It is basically to prepare dinner and chop some light bush away, so I can walk easier. And off course, to play a lot with. And to feel safer at night. And to trow at a tree..... you get the picture. What else to do near a tent a 50 km away from civilation? Impress your companions on how strong a knife can be
biggrin.gif
...Use it to barbeque stuff
biggrin.gif
....Sharpen it, even if it doesn't need to be sharpened

. That might be a factor too: I take my spyderco profiles with me too.
Afterwards, it will join my collection.
I already have a coldsteel bushman, but I don't like it for preparing dinner, because after a day whacking in bush, it is dirty, and the coat is hard to clean.
Oh, I am a student, so the 130$ is the absolute limit, recommend all you like, If it goes over 130$, it is out of the question. Why? I get some funding to do this survival-tour with the departement of industrial psychology (I study psychology), and I have to manage with that.

greetz & thanks, Bart.

Thanks Cliff, that would have been my first choice, except that it costs 183$. I live in europe, and the real limit is 150$, but because in the USA the knves are cheaper, I made the limit 130$.

No offence, but no can do. Next suggestion?

Hello Cliff,

I know you guys have got better prices, every online-knife-shop makes me drool, just because of the prices.
Your 83.75$ work in the USA, but not here.
That'll be double when it gets here, if it gets here in the first place.
I requested the price of the benelux importer, so I didn't have to pay taxes or tranportation, and that was 449 fl, or about 150 $.
No fallkniven, although I am considering one, but not for this. I have to answer to my professor on were I spent the money, and I cannot justify such a knife. It must be cheaper, but not too much, as I can keep it afterwards.

thanks for the suggestion, do you have any others? I was just looking at the Becker-camillius Brute.

I am not sure I understand the price issue. The Brute would be more expensive for me than the A1 (1SKS vs DK). Don't all blades get a similar markup? Or can you buy the Brute locally but have to import the A1?

Anyway, the BK&T line has been getting strong reviews. They have a full warrenty with very impressive backgrounds, the Magnum Camp was designed by Jerry Fisk for example. Check out a recent thread by Darrel Ralph in the Camillus forum.

As you live in EU as I do the price should be around the same as if ordered to Finland

(84$ + shipping 13$ (usps globalexp. mail flat rate envelope - I calculated using 1 lbs weight))*customs(in Finland for knives 8.7%)*VAT(in F 22%)= 126$ < 130$

Ask about shipping methods and charges some send knives with real shipping charges some take extra.

Shipping charge calculator: http://ircalc.usps.gov/

Well, I maybe went out of line, Sorry, but I really did request the price of the Benelux dealer. This is what he says:

Het gevraagde mes A1 is op voorraad en kan opgestuurd worden naar België
(na betaling)
De prijs is ƒ 449,= inlc. Kydex schede.
De transportkosten zijn ƒ 15,=

For all you people who do not read dutch: The A-1 is in supply, and can be sent to Belgium, after payment. Price is 449 Fl ~180 USD. including Kydex sheath. Now why would I order it directly from Fallkniven, if some retailer in the US can sent it here, with taxes and stuff, a lot cheaper?
Something is wrong here. Maybe taxes? transport?
In Belgium, you pay 21.8% on imported good, extra for knives and other weapons, plus the handeling costs of the customs are sent to you as well. About a price increase of 50% just for crossing the border.

greetz & thanks.

Cliff, why A1? Bart wrote this knife would be supported with axe, so maybe F1 would be enough?

Bart, if you like F1 with leather sheath similar to I have reviewed here: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/001348.html - think I could help you. Next week I'll drive to Warsaw, so I could buy this knife in Cenzin Group gun store (no choice, they have this model only

) and mail you. All (knife and shipping) would cost you 75 US bucks only.
If you like this idea call me via e-mail.

Do not through your knife at trees! Not enough you would waste your knife (your problem) - you would waste trees

It would be our, Europeans, common problem, not too much trees remained on our continent.
Where did you find the opportunity to get 50 km away from civilization in Belgium?

Higher marginals. Remember that US list price is about 160$ - same as here in Finland 995 FIM = 167 euro. In EU you can buy knives without extra customs and VATs - so if you can locate cheaper price somewhere in EU you can have it with that.

Good idea of the F-1, do they also carry the S-1, preferably with a Kydex sheath?
By the way, Great review. Gotta get me a load of pencils too!
The cheapset I found so far is that dutch importer (the get them directly from Falkniven, that's how I found the dude, via the Fallkniven website. And Toolshop in Germany . ).
to stick to the topic:
Now, no more fallkniven, considered it, and no thanks. Next suggestions?

No, that's a lie. I am still considering one, after Serguiz post, but not for this trip. For me only.

50 km of civilation in Belgium? Not so hard. Just go south, between Liege and Luxemburg. Only thing you could find is some little lost village with maximal 100 inhabitants. And maybe I pushed it a little bit with the 50 Km, but, it's the idea that counts.

greetz & thanks, Bart.

Boker Integral knives are extremly solid, prices at www.toolshop.de are between 100 and 200 EURO (depends on model and handle material) and the shipping is fast and free.

Hmmm, 50 km adult man can take a walk within one day and night. Saying away from civilization I had in my mind something like Canadian wilderness, Siberian taiga or Mongolian desert where you can't find any man within some hundreds kilometers

Thanks for kind words on my review.
Unfortunately this gun store have no more decent knives, only Far-East made t***h with Winchester or Browning logos. Seems they ordered Fallkniven knives by mistake and now do not know how to get them away

I do not know any alternatives in this price range in Europe. BENCHMADE Nimravus would be one of my very first choices but I doubt you could get it in Europe within 200$.
Try to call James Matiss, maybe he will have more ideas how you could get a decent knife in non-scalping price.

It wasn't clear to me if you need to buy from a local shop or whether an internet dealer is workable. In Germany tool-shop.com handles many good knives. It surprised me to find the Fallkniven knives at high prices at tool-shop. Maybe Fallkniven fixes high prices in Europe or there are extra VAT or something since the Fallknivens are really made in Japan.

You might do well with some German made knives. On the tool-shop site I found:

Diefenthal Jagdnicker DT98081 for 53,69 EUR.

Puma Original Bowie P116396 for 114,02 EUR.

http://www.tool-shop.com/knives/index.html

I didn't find a source, but the Linder 440 Bowie with about 17 cm blade looks pretty good (it does not have a slab tang and I wouldn't throw it).

I don't know about the advisability of throwing any of these knives. They should serve most other purposes well.

Fallkniven is the one to go for. A1 and the rest of the line are of top quality. For something cheaper, check out Marttiini knives from Findland. Do the search about Finnish Pukko (spelling?) in this forum. many people like it. For European dealer, try www.tool-shop.com
Stefan offers free shipping inside the EU.

BK&T Campanion, very solid piece. Also has kydex sheath.

Sergiusz, the S1 and the A1 would fit the durability aspect described, and the A1 is a much better chopper.

I do not know too much about this international finance stiff, but here's my thoughts re: your blade needs in your approximate price range.

Fallkniven is top shelf and great value. The A1 coated comes with a Kydex sheath but your comments seem to lean towards the non-coated blade. F-1 and S-1 should also be considered.

Puma offers some inexpensive selections. While the White Hunter only comes with the more expensive stag handles, the smaller Whiter Hunter II is available with rubber grips and is a very functional knife. They both have sharpend sections of the spine for chopping and rough/dirty stuff you don't want to use your cutting blade for; even though you have your folder.

Buck is stain and corrosion resistant 420HC and they are bargains. The 119 Special, General and Intrepids may suit your purposes.

PS Don't throw knives that were not designed for that purposes. For those that are so designed, throw those only if you really have to.
