Best Cargo Pockets and review of entire pants

 on the Tac-Lites. I live in them 10 hours a day 4 or 5 days a week and they are the most comfortable and functional pants that I own. I used to really like the Propper Tactical Pants but the Tac-Lites are cooler and dry faster. The Propper pants do have a more conventional designed oversize rear pockets, plus cool sub-pockets sized for a wallet inside those big pockets, so they are worth a look.

I haven't figured out a use for the web "strap" or whatever it is that runs horizontally over the right rear pocket.

As I understand it that helps control the whip antenna on some hand held radios if you put them in the back pocket.

+1 on 5.11 Tactical. I have several pairs and have been very happy with them. Being the thin guy, I can usually pick up some really sweet deals on closeouts. I think the last two pairs I bought from LA police gear cost me $3.99 a pair, pretty cool!

It's good to be small and skinny. :D:thumbup:

I've worn a few different types of cargo pants, and the best for me are poly rip-stop BDU's in Small/Short. Price isn't a factor here; I've spent $80 on a pair of Kelty's that ended up being mediocre at best. The Poly rip-stop BDU's come in several different colors, are durable, the pockets are usable and comfortable, and the price is just a benefit.

Everyone says, "NO COTTON!". Well, I'll take poly-cotton rip-stop BDU pants over just about any pair of high-end, high-tech hiking pants...at least, the ones that I've worn.

Dude! You're in Florida! :D The concern over wet cotton & hypothermia isn't quite the same!

I like the Tru-Spec TRU pants. I have 3 pair. AS for the thigh pockets, they have a pocket within a huge beloows pocket. The smaller inner pocket has a velcro-type closure. The main big thigh pocket has a velco-type flap and a bungie drawcord closure. Front slash pockets and rear pockets (with velcro-type flap) have ample room. There are also two more flapped pockets on the side of the calf that I have not used. These pants have flat draw string ties at the bottom, and a flat drawstring waist. The have double material on the seat and knees, and the doubled knee material has a velcro-type closure at the bottom, allowing for insertion of knee pads. I have OD, Coyote, and tan pairs. I tried to dye my tan pants black, but instead they turned out a cooldark tannish-grey color.

I have the 5:11 speedos with the cargo pocket
and thigh holster built in,never a problem with cargo pockets
rubbing wrong:eek:

Are those tac-lights tapered leg?

I had an older pair of 5.11s that were tapered leg, and I didnt really dig that about em.

The Propper tactical pants are non tapered leg, but I dont like the colors. (however I do wear Navy blue ones on the ambulance.) M work pants are goin on 3 years now and still are flawless.

Id love a pair of coyote 5.11s if they were not tapered.

I also like Carhart work pants. Damn near indestructable.

Lots of good recommendations. I'd also take a look at Rail Riders' mid-weight Versatacs. Mine have seen a lot of hard use in the Rockies and in Afghanistan.

 for 5.11 Taclite Pros as well. I wear them everyday for work, and also while out in the woods. In fact, every pair of long pants save one that I own right now happen to be Taclites.

I think they are slightly tapered at the bottom J, I'll check when I get home. I don't have a problem wearing em with hiking boots though. Maybe this pic will help.

Does anybody have any experience with Skillers workwear? They have a poly/cotton (65/35) that looks like it could work for woods bumming... and it has a built in system for knee protection that some of us with achy knees might enjoy.

I don't remember where I read this but I remember it was written by someone whose expertise I didn't question;
Carrying things in the cargo pockets requires 3X the energy of carrying the same weight on your back. He equated it as similar to wearing ankle weights, just higher up and with a bit less drain on the body.

Personally, I don't like the way things feel when carried that low on my leg. I like cargo pants, but might only keep a spare key or extra fire steel in the cargo pockets.

Thats funny you should say that about carryying weight on your legs. I remember looking at something called raptor gear, it was load bearing equipment that distributed gear normally carried on your back or H harness down lower to reduce fatigue on patrols. Personally I don't use my cargo pockets unless I have to. They tend to be useless when I am carrying my drop leg holster on one side and my IFAK on the other. I did have a pair of cargos that had tie down straps that you could secure bulky items inside the pocket to your leg. For some reason I like cargo shorts better than cargo pants...I do find that when CUU's are bloused that the items don't seem to flop around so much.
