Best Cheap Knives

You can browse Knifecenter.com (which, I feel, is the best organized and has the best selection of the online knife stores I've seen so far) and find a LOT of attractive, functional knives for under $50.

Just now I was leering at the CRKT Steve Ryan Plan B, which they sell for $28.95. It's really cool looking, has a great curvature to it. (Wish they would make it in something just slightly better than AUS6, though.)

Also I found the Crawford fixed blade Falcon, which sells for only $18.95 with a combo edge and a dollar less for the plain.

It's tough to see how you could go wrong with either of these at the price. Most of my knives are in the $40-95 range, and I am usually loathe to take them out and beat on them. When I get the ones I've been seeing around $20, I'll feel free to actually CUT stuff with my knives! Who cares if they destroy something that cost them only twenty bucks?? :P

couple of thoughts:

First, re Opinels -- due to the thin blade geometry & carbon steel they can be made *very* sharp. No, you couldn't use it to hack your way through a tank turret but for food slicing/newspaper clipping etc. it can't be beat. Also, it looks like something from a picnic kit as opposed to a weapons depot, which is a good thing in my university office.

other cheap knives -- go to ragweedforge.com & look at the Mora knives, esp the rubber handled "modern Moras." Unreal values for bona-fide working fixed blades in the $9 - 15 range. I've bought a few of the stainless models (I think they're #746) for fishing buddies who would otherwise borrow my knives & they are great.

best,

Andrew

there are very good knives at low prices.

Dexter russel fish splitter $15. 14" 440c Look it up in archives in wilderness skills forum, I jumped on this thing and threw it hard at trees and rocks, resharpened it and it cuts as good or better than any $400. custom (of equal weight).

Tramontina bolo $9.shipping included. carbon blade 13"-14" incredible cutter I have cleared alot of brush and cut down many a trees and it is still going strong.

Dexter russell 6" boning$7 this would make a fine hunting camp knife carbon steel very sharp.

victorinox parringsomeone already mentioned this is sharp and will remain that way for a long while.

A few of you have recommended DiscountKnives.com and I agree that their prices are very good. My question is on average how long did it take to receive what you ordered? The Kasper Professional that I ordered seems to be taking a long time. Thanks

The Opinels aren't made to be big strong tactical knives. However, they sharpen up very easily and cut like crazy. Will the blade hack and chop a 2X4, no, but it will prep food, trim threads, and whittle well.

4. Under $10 level

I'd like to get some different kinds of knives, just to see if I like that knife geometry or what not, without going out and buying a $200 knife that I won't use because I didn't know whether I'd like it or not..

2. Under $25, Target has the Victorinox soldier for $19.99 regular and frequently goes on sale for $17.99. Lots of schrade product, Old timer. Some case, Don't get stainless get CV. sears sells a few pocket knives, I think they are made by Imperial. Again go with carbon steel. Hen & Rooster has a few for under $25

3. Under $15, Meyerco Bolt action, same as the old gerber but with a clip. I got one for $14.95. Check out some the rest of their line too, There are a few good ones.

4. Under $10, Imperial makes some product they sell at discount stores like Wal-mart and Kmart I got a nice black zytel lockback with about a 2 3/4 " blade for around $10, They had 3 blade stockman with green scales that looked like junk. The lockback was a good blade. I would still have it had I not left it on top of a machine at work.

Up to 40$: Spyderco Delica or Endura. Can be found even up to 30$.

Dialex,

You can get Enduras and Delicas that cheap in Romania? I've been wanting to visit Dracula's castle for Halloween. Maybe this year is the time to go!

Mecostigan,

From what I have read elsewhere Discount Knives is a one man, part- time operation, and for this reason deliveries are slower than you might expect from larger companies. There have been criticisms about the service from Discount Knives, but I think the owner is honest and tries to give the best service he can considering the circumstances.

I ordered two Spyderco knives from Discount Knives last month and recieved them after about a week and a half. They were the very popular Endura and Delica models. If you ordered something not so common, I expect the waiting period will be longer.

You can get a good deal from Discount Knives, but it is probably not the best company to order from if you are in a big hurry.

It's a good question even though people might razz you about it. Even the high-end production knife buyers buy cheap knives now and then to scratch the itch. Most of us buy cheap knives we play with now and then.

I buy knives on Ebay all the time. It's great for cheap deals on anything. If you don't have an Ebay account you better get one. I'm going to give you Ebay prices.

1. UNDER $40: Kershaw, Buck, CRKT, Timberline, CASE, Queen, Cold Steel, Victorinox, Wegner.

2. UNDER $25: Kershaw, Buck, CRKT, Openiel, Cold Steel, Victorinox, Wegner.

3. UNDER $15: CRKT commander series knives or Mirage series knives, Openiel.

4. UNDER $10: Openiel, Cold Steel Twistmaster, little used Bucks.

I suggest you take a step to $50 or $60 in which you might obtain a Timberline Wortac (small or large) and some of the better Kershaws.

Never buy a Swiss Army Knife that's not made by Victorinox or Wegner. They're useles.

Never buy a knife named after a gun or gun company.

Never buy a knife that has the words: "like", "similar", "copy", "reproduction", "modeled after", or anything like that. The knockoffs are cheap knives that steal designs and patents from honest, reputable knife companies.

But that's just my opinion.

Buy a Timberline Wortac. For the money, you won't regret it.

I totally agree. These are great knives that will cut well, hold a great edge and are extremely corrosion resistant. I use mine as a line cutter when I SCUBA dive. Plus, they only cost about $2.00 or $3.00 each.
