which chinook is the best version?? what are the major differences?? which one is the rarest?

1- I feel that the chinook 3 is the best version.
2-Ive only owned the 1 and 3. And the difference is in the blade shape and blade grind.. Howver the full flat grind of the 3 seemed to cut and chop better for me...
3- As far as i can the Tell the origional chinook is the most rare of the three since i cannot find one to purchase any where...

I have a 1 and 3 also and would agree with all that Trimcut said.

I personally prefer the shape of the 1 but the 3 is probably the best of the bunch with the flat ground blade being the scale tipper.

If you want a "supertanker" find a Chinook I, it's the toughest folder Spyderco ever built. It is both bulkier and considerably heavier than the II and III. Most people prefer the reduced weight and bulk of the later versions. Between them, it's just a question of whether you prefer a full flat or hollow saber grind, since that's the only difference between the II and the III. I'd pick the III if I needed a super heavy duty folder, since I'm a big fan of full flat grinds.

I think the 3 is better. I have had all 3 version, traded off the first 2, but have kept version 3 for now. :) Like Mr. Glesser says, Spydercos are an evolution. Each version is a little better improvement then the last.
If I had known the Chinook 1 would be so sought after I would have bought a few. :)
Have you seen the pic of the Chinook 1 with the Tom Krein treatment?? Very nice.
I'll try to snag the pic, and post it.

I prefer the #1. Main reason being that I remember seeing a drawing Mr. Keating had back in 95 for a folder idea. The original Chinook most closely resembles that drawing.

Here is a pic of what I was refering to:

The top is a Chinook 1, the bottom is a Chinook 1, ground flat. Tom does some amazing work.
Some more:

Top Chinook is a 1, bottom Chinook is a 2.
And some different Spyderco's and an Emerson:

i really like the bigger finger guards on the II and II models. i wish the fingerguards were even bigger.

I agree that the guards on the 2 and 3 are an improvment over the 1. To me they are in order from least to best by #: 1, 2, and 3.

I could be mistaken; but I believe Sal mentioned some other minor refinements that may not be apparent to the casual observer. Perhaps they shaved off a tiny bit of weight, or changed the internals a bit.

Given Sal's penchant for refining knives without fanfare, things like that are always possible. Think you would agree that, without a more detailed description of the refinements, assuming someone favors the II, deciding if they are more important that the grind would be challenging. FWIW, the catalog does show the same weight for both, so that seems to have remained the same. But, just like me, Spyderco catalogs have been wrong before. ;)

Oh, I wasn't saying you were wrong, by now I hope you know we rely on you to keep us grounded.

The conversation simply sparked a glimmer of a memory that I'm too lazy to look for the text. By mentioning it, I was hoping someone would confirm or deny him saying that. ;)
