Best Choice for a "Beat the Living Be-Jesus Out of" Folder

There is no blade tougher than differ. heat treated plain high carbon or tool steel blade. See Wayne Goddard's 'concrete floor test' for the knife tip. He's right, proper heat treating does make these knives way tougher than competely hardened blades of any alloying content. We have tested a lot, many different ways (outlined on our site) and there is no camparison between ats-34 and selectively hardened o-1 in the toughness dept. Toughness is in the heat treatment.

If you don't want to break the bank but are looking for a brute of a knife with a great locking system.......look no further then CRKT'S Prowler......unfortunately its on the discontinued list.....
You can also take a look at their Grant Hawks "deadbolt over grabstep" D.O.G.
Its also built like a tank and has quite a substantial feel to it.....AUS 8 STEEL to boot!

How about either a serrated Spyderco Calypso Jr. Or a 1/2 serrated Benchmade Griptilian(big or small). There are tougher knives but who wants to carry a f'ng 2 pound folding knife?! Might as well carry a fixed blade in that case.

The MPC Extrema Ratio.

Hopefully we will be seeing the Dark Ops knives from Frank after the blade show available. I plan on getting one of his newly designed knives that is similiar to the MPC when they are available.

Strongest folding knife I have held and used is the MPC, then it's a toss up between the Chinook2 and the SMF Strider.

Gotta second the MPC...it is simply an amazing knife!! Brute-like, massive and extremely well made.

Get yourself 2 opinels and 2 Moras, total would be under $40.00. They will out cut just about anything else, and when you do finally beat them to death you have a spare, and still aren't out much $.

Two more ideas, like you need more ideas.

(1) Surplus early 1950s rigger's knife, made for the Belgian Navy in Sheffield, England. You can get one cheap ($9) from Ragweed Forge. It will be used and abused but you will have a hard time wearing it out using and abusing it yourself. For grubbing in the ground you get a 4" marlinspike. No lock. Guess there must be a lot of Belgian ex-sailors running around without their fingers, eh?

(2) You say it has to lock? You say you like a part-serrated main blade? Check out the Victorinox One-handed Trailmaster, which is one of the few that has the serrations at the tip of the blade where you do most of the slicing they're designed for. A big chunk of knife, and if you wear one out you can get a couple more and not spend your $100.

Cold Steel Voyager. It comes in many blade lenghts so you can choose yours and it has a very strong backlock. The price isn't very low but under 100 dollars.
It comes with two halfserrated bladetypes, clip-point and tanto. The blade is made from AUS-8A. I just got my own voyager with 5 inches clip-point plain edge and it seems to be very good for the jobs you descripted.

Thanks so much for all the replys. Now I have a good amount of research to keep busy with :)

About the Greco knives. Does anyone have a Greco folder that they wouldn't mind selling? I could look into getting one from John but I'd rather pick up one looking for a good home and let someone else who really, really, wants one get at the ones he has in stock. Let me know.

Narration: "VultureParade wouldn't think about it until later, but he came to the conclusion that after his comment the party started to die down and people quietly began sneaking out of the room."

Spyderco Endura. I have had one for over ten years. It has cut old sand bags open, cut a motor mount in half, cut the lid out of a can of beans(I think a plain edge would have worked better), cut the side wall out of 800-1200 tires(had to cut a 1" dia. hole, it ended up being a 4" square), cut steak, cut plastic zip ties, cut cardboard like crazy, cut out coupons, and has cut me a few times. Plus it has never needed sharpening!!
Okay, that last sentence was a small lie. I have sharpened it a few times. :)
When I bought it, it cost $32.00(1993), I think they are up to $45.00(?) or so now, but they come with the VG10 steel, and an ambi clip. Great knife. I still carry it today. I got another one(SE, molded clip) 2 years ago to replace it, but have just can't bring myself to retire it. It was my first Spyderco. Great knife.

I've got a lot of nice knives, including several Sebenzas.

When I go camping, my twenty year old 110 goes on my belt.
Its been through a lot, and its still tight and sharp.
