Best choice for a hard use all purpose survival knife?

Only serious difference between swamp rat's and scrap yard's sr-101 and Busse's infi seems to be corrosion....

For me that seems quite important because, it seems to me that, corrosion is going to degrade the edge quicker. In a survival situation, I want to be sharpening as little as possible.

If you're worried about the competition finish on INFI, I wouldnt be. I turned a scrofa into a stripped kitchen knife, sometimes all I do is wipe it with a rag (...sometimes I don't even wipe it ), and it's never gotten a spot of rust. INFI really does have great corrosion resistance properties, just wipe your blade after use, maybe spray on some tuf-glide, and worry about more important things, like how your going to fit Mr. Daniels in your pack.

Why would you need thrust attack ability in a survival knife? Are you planning to stab the zombies?

I would be partial to the SFNO, but it is more expensive than the equally capable LBTG. NMSFNO is bigger your preferred size. In that same size, I like the FSH, in a thickness no more than 0.27".

A Sarsquatch might work out well. Also check out the skinny ASH 1, FSH, and NMSFNO, and combat grade BOSS Jack.

I could get an NMSFNO with black blade and G10 for $480 on the secondary market but isn't that stupidly overpriced compared to an only slightly less capable TGLB for $335?

Take a look at Jaxx's pics of the TG and NMSFNO side by side (post #16) at
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/928832-Pic-request-Team-Gemini-and-SFNO.

The two knives will be functionally VERY similar. For me, I would spend the extra and pick up the NMSFNO just because I never cared for the double guard... and what's $150 amortized over the rest of your life? If you like the double guard, and the funky choil, I would get the TGLB at offering price.

I still like the SFNO better. :p

Stop worrying about buying on the secondary market. It's not an issue.

I agree.

The good thing about Busse knives generally going UP in value over time is that you can buy them and not worry that you will take a bath if you decide to sell it down the line. Going UP is a good thing in the long run, not a bad thing.

if you don't mind the top guard, the LBTG is the way to go.

A little smaller, a Skinny ASH1 would be a great choice too.

The NMSFNO is my favorite of the 3, and the only thing I've found that I like more is the SHe, but they are more expensive and way harder to find, and the difference between them is like perfect or almost perfect.

The SARSQuatch is another great one at 3/16 with a butt designed for being hammered and a choil big enough to use with gloves on.

If your looking in the 7" range and plan on doing a lot of chopping hold out for a NMSFNO.
If you want an excellent all rounder go for the SARGE 7 and don't look back.
It would be my choice if I could only keep one.
The handle is very secure, If you are worried about it use a lanyard.
If you plan on stabbing zombies more than anything else go for the TG.

In the back country were I live cougar and bear attacks aren't uncommon.

Carry a gun. Preferably a .44 magnum .... bear problem solved

Although if you want to deal with bear the old fashioned way, Busse just released a new sword that might be bear-worthy

A satin jack might work for you. 6 1/2" blade of a versatile shape. Some are .187 thick which will make it a little lighter and feel more like a fighter than a dedicated chopper. Good for most any tasks. Light enough to always be worn. Good luck in your search.

Cougar and Bear would likely be slightly irritated by your knife if you used it on them. I'm thinking you might want to re-think your 'survival' situation and need for a knife with 'thrusting' capability. If you are ever reduced to a blade for self-defense from the big-furry critters, you have failed to plan properly for the environment you find yourself within.

A high-quality firearm will take care of all predators... no many how many legs they happen to have. Bipeds tend to be the bigger problem, though. Think about it... ;)

Back to knives though... Jerry should be releasing the NMFSH soon. Jump on it!

Yeah....I would not be writing off the SARGE7 on the basis that it may not be the best thing to stab a bear with, gotta say that no matter how well stabbed the bear is you are going to probably die as a result of the attack. I certainly don't base my knife buying on the possibility of being attached by a Croc while I am fishing. 9 out of 10 such animal attacks are blitz/without any warning... you may well die with your blade still sheathed... ;) Now Zombies.....

If you have to go hand to hand with bears on a daily basis, and you simply CAN'T get your hands on firearms or dynamite, get a Cold Steel Bushman, and make a spear out of it

if you're in knife range with a bear, you already lost

^^^^^^ Dude... the shoes. Really???

:D

This thread is hopelessly derailed.... and I'm guilty.

Lol the wife likes strange things... Perhaps i'll crop that one a bit better next time ;) (There ya go )
