(To preface, I'm sticking this in the WSS forum, since most of the 'end' items involved in this are basically woods blades and this is sort of my BF 'home'.)

I've been working for several weeks on a present for my stepdad. I ordered a plain Mora #1, and used a large piece of soft leather for several moderations. First, I added a stitched leather wrap to the handle, and then added a patina/mustard finish to 'age' the steel. I also made a very unique sheath for it, with a belt clip (a first for me to use) with flap/latch system using some wood I carved and treated. I finished up with a small drawstring waist pouch out of that same leather, that had another small clip and contained some goodies like a compass, twine, ceramic rod, matchcase, etc.. I will post a good discussion/picture thread of this at a later time, but I wanted to explain how well the timing coincidentally worked out, after seeing what I was gifted in return!

This gift has been sitting in the living room of my parents home for a while, a very large and heavy box (they love to taunt us all...). I was told that I had to open it last this morning, and I shredded that paper in a hurry to reveal a nice Husky 3-drawer tool box! I opened up the cardboard box it came in, a little confused by the weight.

I cracked open the top shelf, and saw a huge assortment of tools. I was so blown away at first I barely noticed what they were...

(I may miss something while listing some of this stuff): It had a new drill bit set, a dremel tool bit set, a coping saw with several different blades, wood rasps, wood carving chisels, a three piece punch set, a multi-head punch plier, and a file set.

I thought, 'Man, that's really amazing. All this extra room in the other drawers for me to store stuff...). Then I kept going..

Holy crap! Massive pounds of leather for making sheaths and handles. Wowza! There is a ton of leather here, and a bunch of leather washers, too. That oughta keep me busy...Wait, more?

Drawer 2:

Can you say handle materials? Tons of slabs, both wood and otherwise. There are at least a dozen types of wood in there, oaks to bloodwood. Also many brass rods and billets, and some aluminum chunks. That should make for some wicked handles!!

By that point I could barely see straight and had lost the ability to speak coherently. So what's in drawer three, a person might wonder...

STEEL!!!! A myriad of unfinished blades, ready for an unsteady and unlearned hand to give them life. I had a small stroke, took some ativan, and kept chugging along...

What's that? Is that damascus? Times two?

These pictures are just awful and do them no justice, but they look simply amazing. The steel feels great. There is a larger bowie style knife and then a smaller blade, with something like a 2.5" edge. It will make a perfect neck knife.

On top of that are two Marble's...

The group photo up top is better at showing these, but they look great. One is the woodcraft and I can't remember which the other is. I can't wait to try putting those leather washers together.

Various other blades were in there, various grinds and various steels.

What on earth do you say to a gift like that? How much thought must he have put into assembling all these things? It was really a kick to the head to show how blessed I really am with a family like this. I had been discussing for quite a while some of my blades and mods I've done to them, and some of my leather work. He doesn't even do work on those sorts of things but tracked down all these tools and pieces. Simply amazing.

I've got gallons of reading to do on how to best do this work, and I'm off to harbor freight tomorrow for a belt sander and maybe a grinder. These things deserve the right tool for the job.

Overall I'm just blown away, and will be showing up with lots of pics of new blades and sheaths, and loads of questions in the makers and mod sections on how to handle the builds.

I absolutely hope you all had a great Christmas, and many good wishes to you towards the new year!

that's an amazing gift, you are a lucky man!

and here I was thinking that my benchmade grip 556 was an awesome gift :D

(still do actually ;) )

Wow, that's amazing, especially as a gift. You are totally outfitted now. If you get a bandsaw, look into getting the belt grinder(sander) it really is nice to have when making knives.

Thanks, guys. This one really blew me away. That's just so much effort.

I actually edited that post just now, Stringray! Meant to type belt sander and somehow that came out instead!

Spooky, you've got some awesome family there. Wow!

I really hate to tell you this, but because you posted the pics here, etiquette says that you MUST post pics of what they become. Sorry man, not my rule...:D

It's ok, it is actually both. When working with metal it's a grinder, when working with wood it's a sander. Don't ask me why, that's just what I'm told.

ETA: Oh, I see, you meant belt sander instead of a bandsaw? Either way those tools will make life good. I did my first entire knife from scratch with files and sandpaper only, then I got the belt sander/grinder and my second knife has gone so much nicer now.

SpookyPistolero, that is just breath-taking. And to think your Stepfather isn't a much of a knife guy, to track all that stuff down and package it for you is amazing!!!

You are truly blessed...

That is just awesome. My wife has done that kind of thing, on a smaller scale, for the past couple of holidays where I get gifts. It's great.

Congrats. Of course you know the bar is now set for the next gift you give them. :-)

Thanks guys! I really am still blown away looking at it this morning. I'll absolutely post some pretty pictures of the finished products!

I need to take some pictures of the blade/sheath/pouch that I gave him. And I thought I was 'going big' by making that!
