Best cold steel folder

If you wait a while, you may come across other knives you like the looks of as much, and save yourself the money the Black Sable would cost. For the price, you could practically afford the Brian Tighe original custom version that Cold Steel ripped off.

Have you seen the Spyderco Civilian? :D

If you really want a cold steel, get a voyager.
Whatever problems people have with cold steel (myself included), most will still agree that the voyager is a great, tough, sharp, useful, and inexpensive choice. Just don't spend the big bucks on a Cold Steel. It is very true that that money will get you something MUCH better.

no i have never held it nor have i held a benchmade or spyderco but the most high end knife dealer we have in my town is Dicks sporting goods and the only people i know are either sheeple or just get what the need to get the job done

Sir;
No worries. I would do an order with New Graham Knives. They will accept a return if you are not satisfied and they take the best care of their customers. They are also a sponsor dealer on this forum. If you are willing to spend 50 dollars, check out the Spyderco Delica/Endura (depending on the size you want) or the Benchmade Griptilian or Mini-Grip. Almost all users are happy with those. If you are willing to spend a few more dollars, are right handed, and don't mind tip down carry, I would seriously consider the Spyderco Paramilitary. Let me ask you this...do you have any preference on locking mechanism and what size are you looking for?

I like the Recon Tanto Folder....pretty sweet, but might be too big for EDC. Watch the video.

I really like the 4" Voyager in the combo edge. The 4" Vaquero is nice, but hard to sharpen on a stone with that wicked curve (I have an older plain-edge one). But for $200, you could get a Bencmade Skirmish or some other high quality folder. I usually won't spend over $100 on a little girly folder, but then, I like big choppers! The only reason I even own the Benchmade is I got it on sale for $100 or so from my gun dealer. It is nice, though.

I only have one: plain edge 4" El Hombre - so far fine.
I've heard good things about high $$ CS folders, especially Caledonian edge.
Handled once Hatamoto - nothing special.

I have a Cold Steel Hatamoto Tanto folder. I got it a few years ago at a pawn shop for $85. It was pretty much brand new. Now I see it on their site for almost $400. Holy crrap. It's a good knife, very smooth and strong, But for that kind of money you could get a Strider or Sebenza, Of even a custom. I don't know why they think they can charge $400 for an average production folder. I think someone over there is alittle loopy.

I'm still quite new to knife collecting so thanks for the in put so i will get a griptillian and just skip out on the sable. I'll get a knife of around that quality and mabey it if the wholesale price ever goes down to under $200. I will admit that the main reason i had to buy the sable was that it preformed so well in solid proof i am still new enough that stuff like that gets to me.

Good thinking. The Grip is a great knife and there's plenty of time to wait for a Black Sable to show up on the secondary market if you still want one by then.

Keep in mind that the Proof videos only show how well CS knives cut. They neglect to remind you how well other companies' knives cut, too. :)

Cold steel voyager best value your going to get.
the clip point seams to weight just a bit less than the tanto for the same size.
Lot of cold steel haters on this forum, don't let there politics effect your wallet.
I like the vaquero series also but I hone the serrations off and turn it in to much better slicer.
I do own most of the other high end factory knives, and will stand by the statement that not one of them are better than cold steel.

I have an El Hombre and El Lobo, both plain edges. They're basically plain edge Vaquero's and I really like their blade shape and grind. The full flat ground, recurve blades are VERY good for slicing through stuff.

The only problem I've had so far is that there is a little bit of vertical movement of the blade towards the spine of the knife. Doesn't move a bit the other way though (towards your fingers).

The Ultimate Hunter is a real good value as well, though it is too large for everyday carry imo. All in all it's a very durable folder that cuts very well. The lock on it is one of the most solid locks I own.

I put a CS Recon 1 Spear Point through hell while camping in May for no other reason than to see how much beating it would take. Everyone was impressed. AUS8 blade, G-10 handle and a very strong lock, and you can find it for under $100. There are also a clip and a tanto blade version available.

Voyager is an alright folder, I have two of them. I was a cold steel man myself before this forum, and now I don't even carry folders! I'm EDCing a RAT3 and Ranger RD4 now. I'd suggest hanging out on the forum a while and checking out the many, many options out there for quality knives. Here's a (not so good) picture of one of my Voyagers - you can see that its taken some hard use and even abuse - notice that the serrations are all torn off (I ended up griding the stumps of them down a little so that they'll still cut) - I don't suggest the combo edge, but the knife is fine if you can get a good deal on one. This is the 4" tanto. I EDC'd it for 3 years while I was in the Army.

Under $200...actually under $100...I like any of the Vaquero series.

There are no CS folders over $200 that are worth anywhere near that price.

Never held one and have only seen pictures of it, but I do like the looks of the Black Talon. It does look a LOT like the Spydie Civilian in the blade though and I doubt that CS has asked Spyderco about it. I like the way the Talon is built, and it looks like it would be a real heavy duty model. Will I buy one? Not sure. I would have to reconcile that rippedoff look of the Civilian, and definately that price tag.
