Best Combat Knife for Everyday Carry

come on guys, the OP has said several times now that he wants the knife for his collection. does anyone actually read through all the posts? there is a huge market in tactical knives but do you really think people buy them solely for self defense purposes? how many cold steel knives have actually been used to stab people? now how many cold steel knives are supposed to look like they are good at stabbing people?

A knife can be a defensive tool just like a gun, but in order to become efficient with any tool, one must learn the tool and become so familiar with it that it becomes like an extended part of your body. One must train and put themselves through high-stress scenarios utilizing these tools in order for the best results when faced with a real life situation. If you do anything less than this, your chances of a positive outcome are less. But depending on the person, you can have all the training in the world and when faced with a real life situation you could respond like someone with zero training. Its all about mind-set, personal abilities, and an individual own will to survive.

Even though i don't believe in carrying guns and knives for self defense because they are entirely unnecessary and often put the carrier at a higher risk
You will have to excuse me for strongly disagreeing with your statement. This idea is simply not supported by facts.

the spyderco knives with the curved blades (the civilian, the p'kal) are not good self defense weapons despite how they are marketed. sorry guys but they defy all conventional knife fighting wisdom.
Ummm... What 'knife fighting wisdom' is that? How many knife fights have you been in? How many years have you studied and practiced knife fighting under acknowledged experts? You have made a very bold and some would argue contentious statement without offering anything to back it up.

The 'Civilian' was designed for people with little or no knife training, because untrained people tend to slash rather than stab, so the blade was designed as a brutal slashing tool. The p'kal on the other hand was designed with input from instructors for a specific and acknowledged style of knife fighting. There is no 'one' best style of 'fighting' blade, different styles of fighting support often vastly different styles of blade. Each is a knife designed successfully to meet a specific need.

the other thing to consider is that in a real fight one of your biggest worries would be getting disarmed so the grip is important.
From my (admitted limited) training in knife fighting, trying to take a knife from someone is a good way to get cut up. It takes lots of skill and training to disarm a knife wielder with any sort of success rate. IMO the danger of having your own knife turned against you is vastly overstated for any but the most panic stricken and fumble fingered individual.

I agree. In most situations, if you take out a gun/knife, the attacker would just walk away. Most assault involve either ego or alcohole and a gun/knife serves as a good slap in the face.

It's a little bigger, with a 4" blade, but IMO there is no better small fighting knife than the Camillus CUDA CQB II.

Some of the best 'tools' for use in a knife fight are made by Nike.

That shows great wisdom and is funny as heck, unless you're well over three score and ten.
I choose Glocks: 9mil, .45ACP, sometimes .38/.357 smith.
My knives are to cut things; not stab things.

Father, Sir, I find this to be scary as hell. I know you are well-intentioned, but clearly misinformed. No flames intended.

The best combat knife for EDC is the Cold Steel Urban Pal. The blade is literally too short to kill someone with, unless you're actually trying (which you should never do for lots of obvious reasons). Yet it's still a great defensive tool. A punch to the arm, leg, stomach or ribs with a 1.5" blade will hurt like hell and stop most sober people in their tracks, but it'll only kill them if they let it bleed out and don't get treated - which would be their fault, and not yours (assuming they attacked you first)

Edit to add: It's also pretty darn easy to punch someone, so a push dagger doesn't really require any training...

Best compact fighting knife i can think of

That is not a fighting knife per se, as you can't stab with it (offensive).

Actually, you can stab with these, I've seen it done myself. While it won't stab as deep as traditional blades, you can stab and flick with the tip of the blade. I would use the tip to control and "bleed" an opponent, but it is not meant for finishing techniques.

A good set of basic DVD instructions for the Spydie hookblade knives can be purchased from James Keating. Simple and to the "point"!

Not gonna advocating to carry a knife as a weapon but have you considered the Spydie Streetbeat?
Gorgeous looking as i understood you want it mainly for collection.
Grip is decent and very confortable and despite the smooth micarta, it wont slide that easily because of the index choil.
The blade being no nonsense tactical wil eventually see some EDC use if you start carrying it now and then.

I carry mine very often as a tool but if the needs arise i wouldnt hesitate to defend myself with this one.

you ever seen someone continue to be aggressive whilst gathering up their intestines and trying to put them back in?

IMHO, the best weapon in a fight is the one your opponent never knows you had until he is missing parts which he would prefer to keep
LOL

You can get a Scrapyard 511, Mashed Cat kydex sheath/Tek-Lok combo, and Comp-Tac C-clips for a little more than $160 with shipping.

Since you say you don't need to fight with it... just something to look good... I'd say go this route... the Benchmade Nim-Club II (plain edge)

It comes in under your weight and length limits, it has a great steel that can be made wicked sharp, it has decent finger protection for stabbing, and it's under budget. I'd also say that if you really wanted, you could get some G10 and make some scales to give you better grip, and sharpen the top half of the tip for better stabbing. Just my suggestion.

Carrying a knife for combat may not be your best choice.. If you have zero training with it, you may get disarmed. Furthermore, if you stab a man who isn't armed, you will probably get shit-canned.

This posts reads like something straight out of some ninja attack fantasy .

To the original poster: Pick up something that will be useful for more than just SD, and you might find yourself enjoying the purchase a little more than a blade which will not likely ever be used for a "combat" purpose. The ESEE product line is a good place to start at. Taking some well-rounded self defence training that includes unarmed and armed tactics would also likely to be a huge help and give you a good confidence boost and some functional skills should the need ever arise.

I know of a amazing combat knife spring assist it has many different blade options, the best being a tanto blade. Microtech socom. I couldn't get a picture of it because I don't own one yet but ive seen some really good reviews on it.
