Best combo edge knives?

So I was doing some yard work with my Skyline the other day, and thought to myself "man I wish I had a serrated edge right now." I know CE isn't the most popular around here, but what do you guys think the best model with it is? Who does it best?

I was thinking the blur but wasn't sure. How strong is the lock up on yours? I've heard of some complaints of really weak locks. Is it deassistable?

It is indeed de-assistable though I've not done that myself... I have a regular blur and used to have a combo tanto edge, lock up is rock solid for both, no worries. There was a thread a few days ago about someone who had de-assisted theirs, shouldn't be hard to find and should tell you how if you want.

Very solid lockup. I tested it strenuously.

Right after I got it I saw a YouTube video of a guy that was able to break the lock very easily. Kind of scared me so I wanted to make sure mine wouldn't fail. It did not and has not.

I think any blade with a recurve makes a good combo edge, first because it's already going to be more complicated to sharpen, and second because the serrations sit nicely in the recurve where you can really rip and saw whatever you're cutting. Eg: Emerson Commander

I like Spyderco CEs because the teeth are a little more robust than most others. With general use folders, super fine serrations like those on a Cold Steel are wicked cutters at first, but pretty easy to break, and they quickly wear with sharpening. The larger serrations on the SpyderEdge are not just easy to sharpen, but durable and they stay sharp for a prolonged time. Even as the physical edge itself dulls, the spacing of the SpyderEdge still gives the ability to saw and ultimately cut even when the teeth themselves are dull. It's not a pretty cut, but it will work if you're without a sharpener or another knife. IMO something Endura-sized or larger is the ideal combo edge size given you still have a lot of straight edge to work with. With something like the Delica, you loose too much straight edge and that can make performing certain functions more difficult.

If I had to pick a single knife...it would be either the Spyderco Military or Benchmade 710 due to the relatively flat profile of much of the area which retains plain edge. You get a lot of straight & plain edged length in addition to the CE in which you can still use most of the knife in a function as you would if the knife did not have serrations. The larger handle give you good leverage when 'sawing' with the serrations which are generally tasks in which you want really good leverage and grip (ex: hold a rope with your left hand and sawing it with the serrated part of the knife in your right hand, within close proximity of each other.

I have only had a handful of combo edges and never thought much of any of them.

I recently purchased this CRK small Regular Sebenza with a combo blade and I must say that I am very impressed with CRK's serrations. The are sharp, and not so pointy that they tear material, but just give extra bite. I was using it to perform some yard tasks and it came in handy when time to prune a larger branch from a Japanese Maple.

Spyderco Military all day long. I just got the blacked out model! Enough serrations to be effective, but also enough plain edge to be perfectly functional. The Millie is an extremely well executed ce knife IMO.

Microtech has very usable serrations. Only thing I don't like is on a smaller blade I never feel like I don't have enough serration or plain edge. Another reason I like microtech. They give a couple options such as these

You can get socom deltas and socom elite tantos with full serrations as well if you don't want a auto

Have you thought about a fixed blade? I have an Arclite with combo edge, and it is a great little neck knife. It is also chisel ground, so it takes a wicked edge.

This^^

Spyderco does serrations right and the military has 2 1/2 of plain edge on the CE models.

I have used mine recently to cut thumb sized+ branches and rope and it chews thru it like a champ!

My little BK11 with its combo edge has served me quite well. It quickly became my favorite EDC knife.
