Best companion knife for BK7 knife

So I got myself a BK7 (awesomeeee knife) and want a companion knife for food prep and some whittling. I have a mora companion knife ( they are pretty tough) but I would prefer a full tang knife that is not shorter than 3in and not longer than 5in and cannot be very heavy as I will be hiking with it and the BK7.

Any suggestions on a companion knife for the BK7?
Should it be stainless since it will deal with food?

What knife would you recommend from the BK series (I am really torn on that BK15) and are their any other knife (from other brands) you would recommend (Condor, Tops..etc)?

Some knives I've been looking at:
BK14
BK15
TOPS Scandi Trekker
Condor Bushlore

Thanks

The 15 is a spectacular little knife and would fit the bill for both of those tasks very well. But at 5" 9/16 its a little larger than your upper limit (not by much though). There's also the other tweeners the FFG 16 or the sabre grind 17. Again, both fantastic knives (I have all of the above) and at 4" 3/8 are probably the exact size you want. All of them have the traction coating though which may or may not be your cup of iced tea when it comes to food prep.

Then theres the Short Kabar FU which are 5" 1/4 (blade length). It has a smoother coating which would probably be better for food prep. I THINK it's lighter than the tweeners (marginally) and it is full tang, its just not an exposed tang like the Beckers.

All of the above blades are like razors out of the box so would be great for whittling. Oh yeah the D2 BK24 would be a fine choice as well but it's on the lower end of your size limits.

To be honest I'm not very well versed in other brands as I only have Beckers and Kabars but I'm sure there would be others that would suit your taste and requirements.

My personal choice? I love my 17. It's just.... cool.

Good luck with the hunt!

Springy..

BK24.

Will fit the bill perfectly.

I'm gonna say the 15 or 24 as well, pick what end you wanna be on of your size limits, or get both, and just give in... Lol, the 15 is great for food prep the 24 is smaller obviously, D2 steel is awesome, so it depends on what you want, and no, you don't need stainless for food prep, but if you prefer it, the D2 steel is more corrosion resistant, have fun!

Another BK 24 vote. Excellent companion to any big blade and my most used knife.

I concur with many: 15, 16, or 11/14/24. Consider stripping and applying forced patina if used for food prep.

A 3-5 inch blade that will complement the BK7? In the Becker lineup, there aren't a lot of options: BKs 11, 14, 16, 24...and which one you choose depends on how much knife you think you need. For me, I'd likely opt for the 11 or the 24. (I prefer either over the 14 - but that's just me). Much as I love the 16, if I'm carrying the 7, it's more knife than I need. The 7 will handle all the grunt work, so I'd want something light & thin for my second.

Thank you for the great replies!

My only concern with the Becker knives was that they are made of carbon steel and since I live in the pacific northwest where it's pretty damp so knives get rusted pretty quickly, so thanks for mentioning the BK24 moose...almost forgot about it :)

Chaos,
here is my 2 pennies for what its worth.
I have a 7 and it is my one tool option. if I am going into the woods and only carrying a knife, it is the 7. I have the Ramora BK13 that rides in the sheath and a fire steel and misc in a altoids tin that goes in the outside pouch.
The 13, 7 combo I have found will handle every thing I need. If it is too big for the 13 the 7 handles it and visa versa, if its seems to small for the 7 the 13 works great.
The 7 has been called the Little Black Dress of the Becker line and when you add the small 13, I have found no wanting for any more or less in the pair.
Just a different thought, I thought I would share with you.
BTW: I live in the PNW too and have no rust issues, even on extended trips, just try and dry the 7 before I put it in the sheath.
Good Luck on the search and enjoy that 7. :)

Ya know....at the risk of being excommunicated, that Mora is a fine knife as a companion to the 7. Upgrade to the LightMyFire version and you've one less thing to carry. I've got a few Mora's 'cause they're serviceable and cheap, and I can loan them to people without worrying about damage or loss (or theft). Plus most every one of the Beckerheads has one or two, I'll bet - so they almost count. Almost.

And just to save my ass from eternal damnation of the BK&T forum, The 24 would definitely be my choice among Beckers.

For NON Beckers (I know....blasphemy), check out Kershaw's Diskin Hunter. Good size (4.6") stainless (14C28N) blade, G10 scales and only around 5.1 oz. - and made in 'Murica.

Another vote for BK24.

You can also sand the finish on the BK14/15/16 still they're smooth but still leaves some coating for protection.

But then you could just strip it and keep it lubed with mineral oil.

Excommunication ceremony is at 7:30 eastern standard time.

I'm ready. I have my 9, my Warrior Machax mod, my fighting 7 sharpened and ready to go. Also I have my Gerber LHR ready to represent. I'll be waiting.

BTW, those are the ones I'm keeping.... the rest I'll be throwing blindly over my shoulder while I run as fast as I can.

I really love my bk16 and this is my go to recommendation, but for what you're looking for I'd agree with the others about the bk24. More handle length than the bk11, but same great blade. You won't need to open any bottles will you??

Hey, who says a companion knife has to be "smaller" than the primary?

Get a M18 from TM Hunt. You know...go big or go home ;):D

If you want smaller, get a 24!!

If you do a lot of food prep, I think the BK-15 would work well (carbon steel, I know). The BK-24 is a great little blade and for limited food prep and misc cutting chores for a small knife, it would be fine for me. But then, I'm pretty darn comfortable with a 111mm SAK for such things.

I really like the BK-15. I would find myself wearing the BK-15 and using it for most tasks and keeping the BK-7 inside my pack. Take a bit of oil along and wipe it down if you're out for a few days.
