I make my boat knives of either Elmax or M390. Not sure how those compare with z-FiNit or Vanax for toughness but they hold up well in salt water and stay sharp for a long time with all the vanadium, especially if he is cutting hi tech lines.
Yea, and for best "bang for buck" it looks like AEB-L is about the best around. Of course it does require control for HT, so best is to send it out somewhere if you don't have the proper equip.
He's looking for a boat knife for the groom. A high vanadium knife will make the best sailing knife for cutting line and other abrasive materials. Hence, M390 and Elmax
Probably not the most practical/cheapest or even beast choice in this specific scenario, but if for some reason one really wanted to use a non stainless steel (or even a typical stainless steel but with even more protection), I was honestly pretty impressed with how well this DLC coating that @razor-edge-knives offers held up to testing and wear.
