Best currency for the comming superstorm

Ok, this is just a thought. As I've been reading this thread I got to thinking about the way my own personal concept of what I'd need to do to have the best chances of survival in a real SHTF situation. My focus is on complete independence and avoiding population. I'm concerned that when people really are desperate playing fair and morality are going to be set aside. Rather than worry about stockpiling ammo for hunting and defending myself against people I try and figure out how to live without it and how to avoid people. If I am already part of a large group of people that would be different, but if I am alone or with just a few family members I would avoid all people like the worlds most dangerous predators that they are. Maybe I'm imagining a harsher reality than the one for which this thread is intended. But I think someone mentioned the movie "The Road" and in that reality i wouldn't be trying to trade with people, I'd be trying to avoid them totally. And good luck to all of us if something like that ever does happen in our lifetimes. Something I believe is more of a real possibility than most people think.

Well I have 85 acres of woods so I'd probably sell firewood.

I could sell eggs from my chickens.

I could sell cheese and yogurt milk and meat from my goats.

I could sell ducks and duck eggs.

I could probably sell SOME produce but unless I could drive to suburbia about 15 miles away most people around me could grow veggies.

However most people don't have livestock.

I guess those would be the major things. I'd probably have to barter for flour and cooking oil.

If it was really hard times I'd probably run some electric fence thru my woods where the oaks are and run some hogs in there and sell the meat from them.

Those would be the major things I could think of to sell.

One more thing.

Been mentioned here already but really the reason most primitive societies have tribes is because it works better for survival.

Here on the hollow there are a few shady types but even they have a tendency to look out for their neighbors. Several times in the past farmsitters and visitors of mine when we have been gone have been approached by my neighbots to make sure they were supposed to be there.

One time I broke down on the inter state about 20 miles from my home. A fellow that lives out on the main hollow who I barely knew pulled over took me to an auto parts store drove me back and helped me.

Once I lost a bale of hay off the back of my truck and these guys chased me 3 miles and caught me to give it back.

for me, if theres one thing i think is worth stockpiling is medicine.. imagine a couple billion dead bodies around the world.. maybe a couple thousand within 10 square miles of your house.... not a nice thought.. some antibiotics might end up saving you

Over half the world right now, with no SHTF situation, makes it just fine with no TP. Maybe we Americans are just a wee bit spoiled, you think. Chris

You wait and see, me and my Charmin (that's right, I am going for the Top of the line) warehouse will rule the world! HA!
(BTW, why do you think those folks in the 3rd world are so thin? They're afraid to eat, because eating = pooping w/o TP!!!!!)

HAHAHA, That's funny I don't care who you are. :D Chris

i'm going to hole up on the roof, with a stack of marshal speakers and a massive amplifier, playing 80's heavy metal, old school Johnny Cash, the BBQ cooking all day, the beers chilling and the whiskey flowing. Gonna pick off the rioters, druggie and zombies one by one.

Jesus built my hotrod, its at LuvaFair! a little Ministry to get us going!

TP may be good, but I like the idea of drugs. The withdrawls would keep em coming back for more! (BTW, DEA, if you're monitoring this, I'm kidding, as far as you know)

Just think of the variety of faire you could bbq as beef runs low (I've already got a running list of the neighborhood pets with a little extra meat on them!)

You play guitar? I plays guitar. If you run a stereo through an amp and then a Marshall, it's going to sound like crap. :D

Unless you Randy Rhoads the cabinets with Altecs instead of Celestions. Altecs is cleaner my brah-heem. :-D

The problem I see with drugs is A. Your clientell gets hooked, does their drugs while not working/foraging and then will come back for another fix with nothing to trade or B. People will be smart enough to stay away from drugs.

Booze, ammo, clothes, seeds, medicine and tools will all be very valuable. Knowledge of agricultre, construction and medicine will be very valuable.

I'm glad to finally find someone that's been there. This art of raising proper oxen is a valuable thing to know. I have a background in leather, blacksmithing and woodworking so I'd like to learn to make the rigging.

Oxen are a daily part of life in my area. We hired 2 guys with teams and carts for a reforestation project a couple of weeks back. Amazing creatures. There aren't any tractors here but plenty of teams of oxen.

TEOTWAWKI up there, would be just another day down here.
Wood cooking stoves, hand sewed clothing, home grown food, home built hydro power setups, natural medicines. All of this is still very common outside of the " big cities".
Think small town USA 1950 but with DSL, with WIFI, 3G, and satellite TV.
The metropolis closest to me is pop. 2500. The next, and closest, mega metropolis:D is 1.5 hours. pop 26,000.
If the " grid ' went down it would take these folks all the way back to 1975 !
No problem.
Pura Vida !

Horses and Seeds, I forgot that! I was thinking more long term, as in regular civilization is a thing of the past and no utilities/help.

but I've considered various scenarios for good barter:
-short term (months to a year);
lotta the stuff mentioned here, money of all kinds, bullets, food, b.o.b.s etc
music! rofl

-medium term (1-3 years);
meds, booze, farming, defense, work animals

-long term (the rest of our and our childrens lives) I think for long term
the knowledge from yourself or others to make meds, grow food,
make tools, and acquire anything else you don't have and need.

land is important in all, you can barter space and more for help/knowledge and security, their will be zombies in all scenarios!

Of course you will risk thieves, war, dethronement, disease when you barter/deal with strangers but I think eventually we will have too, and neighbors will be family by then (or rival clans).

just remember that that is also the best bait for a trap.

vec

Yes, and millions of men have already fallen into that trap. They're called "married".

BTW, when ya going to take some custom work again?? :D

Dude, I wish people would listen to this. I keep telling people that if they want to know what the end of the world would be like, look at 3rd world countries. What we call the end of the world, they call daily life.

Wow, a lot to think about. However has anyone thought about the old saying "Hard times don't last but hard people do"? What I mean is we are all worried about TEOTWAWKI but I for one hope that Civilization will start back up again some time after the SHTF. How long will we wait? Who knows, but there is definitely a good chance we will slowly return to what we call "Normal". At that time Gold will have real value. Don't invest all your efforts into accumulating a large supply now. Price point is too high. Start with Beans, Bullets and Bandaids. Then take a look at some of the lists posted here and if something makes you wince, put that at the top of your personal list. Good Luck to us all.
