Best Damascus in the World..Input Requested..New Money Knifemaker Reality Poll 2010

Seems to me we're goin to eventually list all the damascus makers here :)

I feel the knife is more important than the damascus. If the knife is ugly, great steel
wont help. One must compliment the other ;)

I dont know Don.

I would bet money that Carl from Slingblade could take a piece of your damascus and an old file and create a World Class Knife.

Your steel is pretty incredible....

Here is the last one for me.

This thing should be illegal..its way too cool..

Incredible.

Much Respect...

Yep, I thought the same thing :) There are so many knifemakers producing fantastic looking patterns it would be hard to list them all.

FWIW, I haven't used a whole bunch of different Damascus, the one's I have used though, have been fantastic.

Delbert Ealy - Excellent, great cutters !! I love the L6/O1 combo !

Chad Nichols - Excellent, great patterns, easy etching, good steel !

Although more of a production product, I've had very good results with Damasteel

Kevin Casey is knocking out some great looking Damascus too. His Feather pattern, which I understand he's making available in billet form, is some of the most beautiful available, IMHO :)

That's my 2 cents ;)

Thanks for posting.

Your the second knifemaker to say that Chad Nichols Steel is "easy to etch"

What does that mean?? Is it a fast etch?? Does it etch real clean?

You and Broadwell both said the same thing about his steel...

Thanks....

Thanks David B it was fun making blades for you At one time I thought I would try and sell damascus but it did not take long for the reality to set in that my time would be better spent making knives not saying I wont make blades if ask just am not going to spend time making steel with the hopes to sell it. But if the Pimp man calls and wants some Butt kicking lisch style damascus I will hook the Pimp up.

If this year goes like I anticipate maybe I can have you make me one of these with huge damascus dollar signs...

Thats what the Snody Ranch needs..

I am serious,,,I have gone back to look at this gate at least fifty times..

Much Respect from Texas

Thanks Snody That is how I pay my bills the knives help and I would love to Pimp out a gate for your ranch. By the way I get a Big smile every time I see one of your Videos. it is good to see you have so much fun with the craft.

I'm not sure if it is comparable with modern high-tech steels today, but I would only be half surprised if I heard it was superior. Here is a documentary summary of the traditional way of obtaining "tamahagane" steel. It's a very mesmerizing video if you want to check it out!

Kyle Royer is turning out some nice steel too. And yes, we can all just name all the mastersmiths because many of them are doing so.

As far as stainless damascus I prefer the look of Norris's Hornets nest. I can't comment on performance as I don't have much experience. I've been told he throws d2 into the mix though and that it performs well.

I almost forgot!! Josh Smith is making great looking steel and doing LOTS of different patterns.

some folk call it a slingblade...I call it a kaiserblade...MM Hmmm

Thanks for making me laugh this morning,,,

i almost choked on my mustard biscuit,,,,

Great Post....

Just a side note; If anyone wants Devin Thomas steel, make sure you get it from Devin and not his brother

I doubt we will list them all as there's probably hundreds of knifemakers who create their own damascus, in addition to the guys who primarily create damascus for other's use. But it sure seems like we are listing a lot. Probably a good indication of the vast talent out there. :)

My point was that "what is the best damascus in the world?" is IMO too broad a question to be answered, as on any given day any number of makers can product a billet or finished damascus blade that many could consider the best from both quality and aesthetic perspectives.
Now, easier questions to answer would be who is consistently making the best or what damascus is consistently the best of those producing damascus.

I think Mike's question to me was a good one in that even though (as you said) "if the knife is ugly, great steel won't help" is very true, some maker's damascus has more a positive impact on their knives's investment potential than others. Both Jerry and Tim's hunters are IMO a good example of this. Not un-like some makers amazing ability to choose and work handle material has more a positive impact on their knives investment potential then some other makers. ;) :)

Good point regarding Devin Thomas and Devon Thomas damascus.

Good thread Mike. A nice combination of opinions and eye candy.

I am mesmerized with the iron work displayed on your website

Thanks for watching the videos I really appreciate it.

My goal with the videos was to sell knives and provide entertainment,

We are blessed to have over 140,000 video views and the "Is Snody Crazy" thread in the General Area is currently on the Bladeforums Top Billboard chart at #30 for all time views since the beginning of the forum.

Have a great week..

Great Post.

I like the stain resistant blends living near the beach with the salt laden breeze blowing through the shop.
