Best deodorant?

While I'm thinking about personal hygiene, what is the best all around deodorant on the market today? I mean something that will actually last most of the day, prevent perspiration, and not stain clothes. It seems like whenever I buy a deodorant, it will work for a few weeks, then it will quit working, and I'll have to buy a different brand. I've tried everything from Speed stick to Old Spice Red Zone. Anybody have any suggestions?

I tried Old Spice Red Zone and it dried out my skin.
Now I just use Old Spice High Endurance. I haven't found anything that works better for me.

I seem to remember hearing one doctor reccomending using rubbing alcohol, but that seems rather uncomfortable.. Has anyone else heard of this?

I used Red Zone for a while, but had to quit because it A)didn't seem to work any longer, and B)it caused rashes to appear in my armpits.

I would not use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, very drying to the skin

You should not use any topical agent that gives you a rash, I do not understand why it stopped working (makes no physiologic sense to me).

Old Spice High Endurance works well. I don't know if it's the best but it is very good.

I've never liked any of the major brands of deordorants. I've tried so many and usually found something that I didn't like about it.

But I found this crystal thing. I think it's made of Alum. No scent, lasts forever and keeps me fresh. Besides, it doesn't have a lot of chemicals in it. I don't know how it works but, I don't use anything else. Give it a try might be just the thing.

I can't stand Old Spice. It didn't work, first of all, then it left my armpits yellow.

By far, the best deodorant I have ever used is Degree. It is amazing. No odor, even at the end of the day.

Try it.

Skip the scented deodorant and look for an unscented anti-perspirant. I use Sure Clear Dry unscented.

Mitchum. I've had sweat blowing out every pore in my body, except for under my arms. They have a slogan.... "So effective, you can even skip a day."

They are correct.

Hah! Amazing coincidence.

I can say just the exact opposite.

And that suggests that "you just gotta kiss a bunch of frogs until you find a deodorant that kills the stank for your own body chemistry".

The Old Spice High Endurance (deodorant only, no anti-perspirant) gave me an itchy rash, and very promptly, within 2 days. I used it for a week hoping the rash would die down, but no dice. But it did take that pungent sharp BO stink (sorta skunky? sharp smell) and make it a more muted low level funk that didn't seem to travel any big distance ... hard to describe the change. And improvement.

And the Old Spice High Endurance "Red Zone" (combo of anti perspirant and deodorant) is now the best I've found, for me personally... same change, sharp BO down to muted funk, but totally comfortable. And it doesn't seem to stain or "wax up" my shirts like my previous anti-perspirant/deodorant did, Mennen Speed Stick Unscented "Antibacterial" (MSSUA), which I used for many years until it sorta stopped working.

Tried Degree before Old Spice recently, no better than MSSUA. Also tried Mitchum speed stick, it felt ok but worked just ok.

I think that highlights the issue: you'll just have to experiment around until you find something that works on your particular body chemistry, and that chemistry might change over time. Mine sorta did. I had to switch products.

And you can't quite do it by just reading labels for ingredients. The antibacterial additive "Triclosan" in MSSUA helped some for a while, then died off (same stuff they put in antibacterial dish washing soap). MSSUA also contains Aluminum zirconium tetrachorohydrex glycine (AZTG), which is an anti-perspirant.

But guess what... all of these also contain AZTG:
Mitchum Cool Dry (20%)
Old Spice High Endurance Red Zone (19%)
Degree

Go figure. I don't get it. So ya gotta experiment.

I used to use all sorts of high endurance and extreme crap from Old Spice but then I discovered an Arm and Hammer baking soda type that works really well for me. I smell super fresh now. :D :D

Tusey roll on works for me. I sweat at the hint of exertion or temps above 80 and I eat lots of garlic and other odoriferous foods. This is the only product that prevents me from smelling like the contents of an old gym bag found in the dumpster of a chinese buffet after I've spent hours sealed up in Tyvek (or finishing a regulatory meeting).

I like the regular Old Spice anti-perspirant.

Some of those other anti-perspirants feel like glue to me. Has anyone tried just plain old Elmer's glue? If you clog those pores well enough, nothing can get out.

Certain Dri works well for me. Roll on before bed every couple of days and you're set. But, a seperate deoderant is a must as this is only an anti-perspirant.

The crystals... they look like a rock of clear plastic. Are available in some health food stores and work well, last years if you don't drop them on the tile floor, have no scent, no chemicals and kill the stank in everyone as well as reducing wetness. They are the best.

I think a key here is how the fragrance in a particular deodorant mixes with your body chemistry. On me, Old Spice smells worse than any possible body odor! The clear Gilette deodorants smell nice on me, especially Cool Wave, but I can't use more than one before it starts to give me a rash, so I have to use some other deodorants in between.

Something I read and believe to be true: the deodorant does not kill all the bacteria under your arm, and the bacteria grow back as the deodorant wears off. This turns out to be a good thing. Nature abhors a vacuum, and if your native flora and fauna are completely wiped out, new aggressive nasties move in, that can smell worse and cause other problems. For that reason, the suggestion above about isopropyl alcohol is considered a bad one. Also, over-using a strong deodorant opens you up to the same problem. I do know someone who had a problem due to this exactly.

Now, the question is, why is it safe for me to use alcohol on my hands, but not under my arms?
