Best digital camera under $200

Megapixels aren't that important, unless you want a bigger print of your picture.

The most important thing to me is OPTICAL zoom. And for that reason, I absolutely love my Canon sx 100is! Now they have a newer version, the sx 110is!!!

I'm pretty happy with the pictures I get out of my camera, just wish I had the newer version...

I think it would meet your requirements perfectly. Takes great macro, and you can really reach out and capture pictures that a lot of other cameras can't which is great for getting pictures of that animal you see on the next ridge, or that hawk way up in the sky. Oh, and it takes two AA batteries!!! Just make sure you use lithium batteries, they last WAYYY longer, although alkalines still work in a pinch, you just don't get as many photos. Well worth the $15 over your budget in my opinion.

if you are going to get a pocketable camera, you will be limited in both manual settings and zoom. I got a Canon SD1100IS, and it is about the size of a deck of cards. I think the convenience and portability make up for those few shortcomings. It takes nice outdoor pictures.

+1 on the Canon SD 1100IS, I love mine.

Here are a couple links to review sites that might help:

Whoa Stingray, that newt pic is great!! how recent is that?

This weekend, see my new thread. I found one that stayed still for me, lol. We actually came across a ton! Had to watch out not to squash any on the trail.

Another vote for Canon. Their customer service is excellent. You can buy Canon from Dell online for about $30 under most retail prices. Image Stabilization (IS) is a plus. You will need to buy a bigger memory card; If you're trying to save money, a 4 gig is plenty (on a 2-week wilderness vacation I didn't pass the 2-gig mark taking at 3 megapixels). I bought a 4gig from kingston. I could not decipher all the speed ratings for the memory cards.

A question for the guys with Canon A590. (My Sony Cybershot just bit the dust over the weekend). I was reading some reviews online of the Canon and everybody loved it in terms of function and features,(OK, here it comes) but a lot of owners were complaining that the Battery life (it apparently uses AA's) was really bad.
Anybody got any experiences (good or bad) about the battery life?

Thanks.

The battery life on every digital camera is bad. They all suck them down like crazy.
This is SOOOOOOOO true. Even the rechargeable ones don't last all that long. The ones in our Cybershot lasted only about a year and a half then would only hold a charge for about maybe an hour after that .

I've had my Cybershot since 2007 and the battery life (and by that I mean how long between rechargings) has been what I consider acceptable. And by acceptable, i'm talking about using the cmaera for a couple of days in a row without recharging. The only time my camera really went through the battery was when I was doing videos. I was just wondering if the A590 had a rep for killing off a couple of battteries in some sort of record time. I'm talking about over and above what would be considered typical.
But, if you guys don't think that the A590 is out of the ordinary in that regard, I'll just chalk up the reviews I saw complaining about the battery life as being unrealistic expectations on the part of the buyers.

Stingray - WOW! Really nice pics. Thanks for your input.
How is it on recovery time between shots?
Have you ever tried AA rechargeables in it? Just curious.

Hate to quote this again, but amen. Mainly the power is tied up in the LED display. One trick for this is to get a camera that has a standard viewfinder that actually lines up with the lens, and turn leave the display off. Cameras in this price range often don't have viewfinders. Mine does, but it doesn't show anything like what the screen will, so it's useless.

Please go to a brick & mortar store and check them out before you buy!

i find having a high mp count just allows you to print bigger and bigger shots without having degradation in quality
i used to get by with 2+mp (sony dsc) and print out 8R shots
now that im using a 7mp camera 8R shots are much clearer
the old shots were very nice, but the new camera just outperforms the old one
