I have yet to find duct tape that will retain stickiness after being pulled from its original roll.

I've made smaller wraps around pencil-sized stuff for kits, and it always curls back and won't stick to itself very well.

Any suggestions??

I really like the clear and heavy plastic tape. You find it in the section of home repair and lumber stores, where the plastic to put over windows is found. I always carry a roll, with the tube taken out, and flattened, in my back pocket, next to my clip knife. I use it for lots of stuff almost daily.

I think it is in the current Backpacker magazine but someone is selling small "rolls" of duct tape. I think it is 9 or 10 feet on a flat card. Looked very thin and easy to find space for one or two of them. I would be willing to bet the upscale dealers like REI or EMS would carry them.

I buy some for my technicians that will literally tear itself apart as you pull it off the roll. Let me know if you want some, and I'll set you up with my vendor, but be warned, it's REALLY sticky stuff. Cost is about $10.00/roll.

Look into some gaffer's tape. Hard to get, but there's a couple of online places.

I am in the biz we use it in the entertainment industry.

this **** is worthless in outdoors get a little dust or dirt and it looses its tackiness the stuff is not cheap either 12-20 dollars a roll depending on where you buy it.

something that actually holds up better in the dirt environment is what we call paper tape down side is that it tears really easy

you should check out 3M and see what they might have

I work for a very large heavy equipment maker and
we use a "green" tape that is amazing in it's
ability to hold stuff togther. It's cloth backed
so it will tear easy off the roll but be warned
whatever you put it on is STUCK. I've used it
indoors and out with very good luck.

It's made by Polyken Technologies of Mansifield ,
Mass. 02048. Get some it's good stuff :D

Cool guys, thanks for all the advice. I'll look into a couple of these.

Although some disagree, duct tape [I'm pretty sure] gets it's name from sealing joints in heating and cooling air ducts. [I used to do HVAC for a living.] I get the really good stuff from our local heating and cooling wholesaler. If you don't know who that is in your town, call the guy selling, repairing, or servicing HVAC. They may not stock it but most wholesalers will be happy to get it for you. Should cost about $10-$15 a roll. I'd be affraid to stick it to my skin because I really think it would take the hide off. I have temp repaired canoe hulls with it that floated for a week. It's more of a placticized{sp?}cloth than most cheap stuff.

B-Prepared,

I would appreciate it if you could find a manufacturer, distributor, product name, product ID number etc. -- or even better a phone number or Web Site, for this good tape.

In our area the duct work is taped with the cheap stuff from Home Depot or Lowes and I was not even aware that there was a better Duct Tape available for Taping Ducts.

Perhaps REAL DUCT TAPE, is what we are all looking for. The 100 mph tape that I purchased is not what I want, in fact I just tried to use some tonight and it sticks to itself so well that it pulled itself apart on the roll but did not do a good enough job otherwise.

I just purchased some PROFESSIONAL DUCT TAPE... :D From Ace Hardware and there happened to be one of my HVAC buddies in there at the time and he said that he doesn't know of anything better than that but it was only $4.49 for the standard large roll. I'll let y'all know what I think of it.

Lee Valley Tools has something called the Original Duct Tape. I haven't tried it yet, but I have noticed it in their catalogue. I tried posting a link, but it didn't work. So, go to Lee Valley (http://leevalley.com)
, click on Woodworking, then Adhesives, then Tape. Or, maybe somebody can post a link. I usually can, but this link didn't work for me for some reason. Also, this sort of post might get a better response in Gadgets and Gear.

Well I finally found out about the tape I use. Sorry it took so long. The brand is Nashua. The modle{?} is # 357 and it's made in Watervliet, Ny.12189 I think if you can track it down you'll never look for different duct tape again. I believe the reason so many people roll their eyes about "good" duct is the same reason most people think a "good" knife costs about 25 bucks. If a tradesman isn't 50 or so years old, he [or she] has probably never heard of or used the old style cloth duct tape. Hope you guys can find a source for this stuff because it's really worth the trouble.

Try not asking the local HVAC people about where they get or what kind of duct tape they use. Ask instead what WHOLESALE parts house the use for parts and supplies. If a thingamabob breaks on a furnace or AC where do they get parts? THAT'S the people you want to ask about what duct tape they have access to. Honestly this isn't that hard. I've bought good tape in a half dozen different towns. You DO have to be in the right store though. Most all wholesalers will sell cash to the public [especially if you ask nice.]
{By the way, this is the same place to get durable high quality thermometers!!!!}

On the inside of the roll of tape, what company name/model number is printed on the cardboard? Thanks.

The duct tapes made by 3M are considerably better than the cheap stuff sold in Walmart, Home Depot, & Lowes. K-mart usually carries 3M duct tape. 3M makes several different grades. The better stuff costs more. HAve also seen it in hardware stores.
The Nashua brand mentioned above is also better than the cheap stuff.
Most of the aluminum tape I have used is also very good, but its use will be somewhat limited due to its low tensile strength.
