Best EDC for under $200

..or you can just buy a Case Soddie Junior in CV or SS for US $20.00, and in another ten years look at purchasing another.

By my reckoning that gives you twenty years of utility for US $40.00, which gives you a balance of US $160.00 to spend on bills or the Missus....either of which will earn you big brownie points.

A Case Sodbuster is not the best EDC under $200.

I'll bite, so what is wrong with a Case Sodbuster Junior as an everyday carry knife on a farm....or anywhere else for that matter ?

For $200 you can get a better knife, that's all I'm saying. Nothing especially wrong with a Sodbuster, but there are better things.

This isn't one of those "traditional vs. modern" knife things either. If you doubt it, ask the Traditional subforum what the best <$200 knife is for farm work.

I do not have to ask as I have lived the majority of my life in the bush and have spent my working life working in the bush as well....moreover I work with knives in my job and have been doing so for the last eighteen years.

And I have never found a single blade pocket knife with a three inch blade wanting in any way when it comes to a simple utility knife.

If I wanted a simple utility knife I would get a utility knife.

You can get these even cheaper then the Sodbuster.

Yes, and I will be as pleased as punch to watch when you knock the nuts out of a mickey with it.

Are you trying to use some sort of down under jargon to confuse me? :D

Seriously, there are better knives. Better steel, better ergos, better handle material, better quality. Just because you're getting a little nostalgic doesn't make it any better.

If you're going to spend $50k on a car you don't go and get a Honda Civic. There are better cars.

:D....you are right, there are better/more expensive steels etc, but for a utility knife that will be used to cut hayband, cut up a dead hogget for dog food and generally be treated as a tool that will be most likely lost or misplaced at least once in its working career...a lot can be said for a cheap knife that has decent steel and can be readily replaced at any time.....ergo Soddie JR.

All of which I would gladly perform with a Military. The edge retention is better, it has better reach, a finer tip, lovely ergos, etc. :)

True, I'd be a bit more upset over losing my millie then a sodbuster. :o

I would much prefer to shoulder the loss of a $20.00 knife.....I managed to lose a Puma skinner down a long-drop on a property up near Louth in NSW (on the Darling River) in the 80's......and I can tell you that there is nothing funnier that watching some poor sap fishing around inside a long-drop (sh!thouse with a 30' hole) with a long piece of bent wire.

Yes I got the knife, but all in all I would have preferred that it were a cheap knife so I could have left the rotten thing there.

I'm going to have to side with no-one, if he has had a sodbuster serve him for all these years, with zero problems, there's no reason to lecture him on what makes your Millie better. You may think your Millie is better, but to him, if a sodbuster performs 100% of the tasks he wants, then it's the perfect knife.

I would have to agree with you there. ;)

The Soddie is a recent addition to a long list of knives that I have used....and if I had started with it I would not have needed any of the others.

Folder - Emerson CQC-8 or CQC-7 / Benchmade 710 (or almost any other Benchmade) / Spyderco Paramilitary

Fixed - RAT Cutlery Izula, RC-3 or the RC-4 - I love Striders, but they're more expensive than you mentioned and I really don't think you can get more for your money than you do from RAT Cutlery. Absolutely great knives!!

Spyderco Manix! Why bother with a fixed blade for over $100 when you can tote a Manix 2 folder which is totally dependable and only cost $80.

My Manix 2 has pushed $500 custom knives out of the edc rotation. It's that good!

Buy a Manix 2 for $80 then spend the extra on some other toy!

The Manix 2 is an awesome knife and an awesome deal on a USA-made product. I can't see how it would be possible to open the box on one and not think you've found a great bargain and a great knife. The Manix 2 could sell for $120 and still be a good deal (sshhh...don't tell Sal)!
