best edc model

In traditional knives, I like the Stockman. Second choices would be Trapper and Canoe. Of these I find the Stockman the most functional for my needs.

Always supplemented by a SAK.:)

A picture is worth a thousand words...The Large Trapper, and the Canoe are CV. The others stainless. I prefer the stainless for ease of maintenance.

I have been carrying a 3" toothpick in my jean's "Zippo pocket" for a while.

^^^I also supplement it with a SAK:)

My advice on the topic of best EDC? A comfortable one. Now, it's up to you to decide which is more important, comfort in the pocket, or comfort in the hand, but comfort is the key. I have many beautiful knives, with one blade, two blades, three blades, different handle materials, etc, that sit in a drawer because they are a pain to carry. They jab me in the leg or are too heavy and weigh me down. If you choose to carry in a sheath on your belt, it makes this part of the decision making process easier. However, comfort is the key. It doesn't matter how good looking the handle is, or how useful the steel is if your going to leave it at home. There's plenty of styles to choose from in the traditional knife world, so you should find your knife pattern soon enough.

Very well put.

I know at one point in my life I had bought a knife that was just too bulky or heavy to fit in my lifestyle and what I was doing. It ended up in my sock drawer for a while till I gave it away. The knife has to fit in your lifestyle.

I would never knock any traditional knife, but how many of the knives being sold are really that usable for todays semi-urban suburban life most of us live?

I think that is a lot of the reason that Case has such a line up of 'smaller' knives that are twins of the regular size ones. Mini trappers, mini toothpicks, small stockmen, and even the baby butter bean which is a mini canoe. They just fit most pockets and lifestyles better than a 4 1/4 inch full size trapper. I remember when Buck first came out with the 301 stockman, and they sold well. But then the PX started to carry the 303 cadet, and they sold like hot cakes. That little bit of downsizing made a big sales difference.

But it all so much depends on how you dress and what you do. A guy on an outdoor construction site is going to be carrying a different knife than a commuter in a suit running for the 8:15 train into the city.

But Voltron is right, how comfortable is the knife to you, both to carry and use?

Just something to consider.

I have a white collar job so no need to carry a large folder, and I do agree that the smaller knives carry better for my lifestyle. At the same time though, I find the larger knives more comfortable to actually use, which I guess is another aspect to consider in choosing the right EDC knife...use versus carry. I've found what I consider "middle ground". A SAK, and 301 are comfortable to carry and comfortable in my hand (compared to a Peanut, or a 303). I used to carry the smallest knife I could find, but now I carry the above. I guess it all comes down to individual "taste". What carries well for one, might be a hindrance to another.
