No China crap like CRKT or American Knife companies who produce in China get my vote!

Then, in essence, you have nothing of value to add to this thread, seeing as how Kershaw produces knives in China.;)

OK, 3G took almost all of my answers:D

My current EDC rotation of sub $40 knives:
Vic Farmer
Buck 110
Buck 112 (might even enjoy this knife more than the 110!)
Leatherman Fuse
Vic Climber
Spyderco Ladybug Salt

Vic Farmer
Spyderco Ladybug
Spyderco Dragonfly VG10
Spyderco Tenacious
Boker Trance
Ontario RAT 1
Becker Necker BK11

I would say:

Becker Necker BK11
Any of a number of SAK's, I personally like the Huntsman
Mora 2000, 510 and 511
Buck 110
Gerber EZ-Out (carried one for years with no problems, not a hard use knife though)

Good ideas from all. Here is my take:
1) SAK- It's hard to beat a 1-2 layer SAK for utility. My Vic Waiter may have the highest function-to-weight ratio of any knife I own. That being said, I love alox (edc a soldier) and IMHO think the current best deal going is the alox Cadet usually under $20.00.
2) Spyderco Tenacious- Country of origin aside, anyone who has handled Sal's Tenacious must agree that he has hit a home run from a marketing/price point perspective. 3.375" 8Cr13MoV blade, 4 oz. $31.00. Bring on the smaller Persistence....
3) Benchmade Monochrome- Possibly the best option in an entry-level Benchmade, 3.04" N690 blade, frame lock, 3.84 oz. $32.00.
4) Buck 303- All the 3-bladed stockman you will ever need. Three 420HC blades, 1.9oz, $26.00.
5) Case Barehead Slimline Trapper- $25.00 gets you a slim CV blade that cuts like a hot scalpel. Good for anything from mail to trout.
6) Kershaw Skyline- Don't own one of these.... yet, but what's not to like about a 3.125" sandvik 14C28N blade, G-10, 2.3oz weight and Kershaw quality for $29.00?
7) Blade-Tech Wegner Designed FRN folders- I am digging these for $20 and under. AUS8 and a good value.

RAT1, BOKER M type, 110, just about any cara cara, any chineese made NAVY folder( they are excellent), plus alot more as mentioned here. keepem sharp

The Kershaw Barrage for $34.99 plus tax at Wal-mart has been worked into my EDC junker rotation. The 3 1/4" blade is made of the latest Sanvik mix they are using and it has a frame lock.

As has been noted before the thumbstuds are a little small and sharp but I have no problem using them. I'm still considering a cheap modification here, filing down some of the sharp spots a little if nothing else.

The only problem with buying it as a junker is that I still like it too much to abuse. The satisfaction with the purchase of this knife is on par with knives I've paid 3X as much for. Can't really put my finger on it besides that it just feels right in my hand and cuts about as well as any other knife I have.

Here is my list of sub $40 EDC's:

  • Almost anything by Victorinox
  • Case Yellow Handle CV knives
  • Buck 300 series
  • Byrd Knives
  • Sanremnu Knives
  • Rough Rider Knives
  • Opinel Knives
  • Douk-Douk Knives
  • Higonokami Knives
  • China Crap like CRKT
  • American Companies that produce knives in China

;)

Can't make a comprehensive list but 3 recent knives that have pleased me a lot and stay within the price range are:

Bulldog Teardrop Jack, 2 blades carbon 30 Dollars
Böker Copperhead in Grand Canyon Bone, carbon 32 Dollars
Marttiini Puukko, birch handle, carbon blade and an EXCELLENT leather sheath 18 Euro, that about 26 in your money I think.

That's two from Germany and one from Finland.

All well finished all very workmanlike Traditional knives.
