BEST EDGE, Carbon vs. Stainless

Thanks for the overview, nice work!

Now please everybody take a look at the values for D2 and ATS-34. (I checked back on this and found the same numbers.) Amazing isn't it? D2 much tougher than ATS-34 at the same RC of 60! Now I really wonder why everybody considers D2 as brittle. They should see what kind of abuse Strider knives can take. It seems that company would better off making them out of D2 instead of ATS-34

So there must be anything else about toughness than just Charpy value, otherwise all these knife writers would be wrong.

BTW any data available on BG-42? Also, a cutting result for A2 would be nice.

Ralf: I too would like to see cutting results for A2 as I an a CRK One Piece fan. It's odd that there are no scores for BG-42.

3V; is it harder (no pun) to work with or just too expensive to be used more frequently? I was always under the impression that the actial steel stock used in making a knife is one of the smaller cost contributors.

The Strider WB of ATS34 that Cliff is testing is about 1/4in thick, like the VG10 Fallkniven A1 which is also considered a tough knife. D2 is tougher, it's been around a long time and is a common wear resistant tool steel, but it's also described as not developing as refined of an edge as other steels.
