Best Emerson ?

I think it's a good knife, but the blade is longer than you were originally posting about (3.75).

I forgot about the Mini-A. I carried mine today. Another great choice.

At least thats my next one, because a100's don't have a wave :D

SilentJohn, the best Emerson with a 3-3.5" is the Mini CQC-8 or Horseman. The recessed lock can be opened and closed with either hand. Unlike the CQC-7 or A-100 models. The Mini 8's blade is easier to sharpen than the 7b tanto point, the 15's tanto/recurve, or the Commanders recurve. I picked up my Mini 8 for only $112 at one of our favorite web sites found in the dealers section. I tried the A100 but it's not for lefties. The same with my older 7A. My Mini CQC-8 has become the replacement for my retired Benchmade Mini AFCK. If you're familiar with the legendary AFCK you'll know that the 8 has a 1/4" longer blade than the Mini AFCK and the blade is 1/8" thick compared to the Mini AFCK's 3/32" blade.
Go with the Mini 8 and you won't go wrong.

I ask because I live my cs ak-47 with the auto lock but it's a little chunky and I am shopping for something easier to carry but with the wave which I've come to know and love very much

If the wave's available for the CQC7A, that'd be my choice if $ is an issue, otherwise, the HD-7. I'm not a fan of the HD-7's chisel grind blade, but can live with it on an otherwise excellent knife.

The Horseman & mini-Commander also come to mind as you can reprofile the edge to be a true V-grind & they carry well in the pocket.

Most of them work pretty well these days. Some are better than others though. The M-Wave hands down is the best Waver of all of them if you ask me but you won't find it in Emerson's inventory. Its at MD Tactical only and only in limited runs usually. I don't care what you compare it to though it Waves quite well. In my opinion the worst one, and one that could easily be dewaved for as bad as it is is the 14. Every one I've ever owned has been horrible for reliably Waving and when you do make it reliably work it tears up your pants from the added force and effort needed to make it work. Not good IMO. Also for what its worth, the 14 is the one I've been asked to de-Wave for folks on three occasions. No other model has ever been asked about by one of my customers about that.

In my hands the 12 was really reliable, as was the 13 and the 10. Some of the older Emersons like the Commanders were hit or miss but at least these days the new ones are a bit bigger in the Wave hook area as are other models now compared to some of the older ones. The Wave stands up to catch better than some of the older models I've seen if you study them. My HD7 worked pretty well also come to think of it.
