Best engineered knives

are you guys mixing up engineering and tolerances and quality? where is the engineering in CRK? i mean dont get me wrong, the tolerances are perfect, but thats in the manufacturing. nothing much to those knives as they are just frame locks. the CRK with the tilock is a hawk and gavin invention and is an awesome feat of engineering. same with the Hawk Mudd and its ingenious sealed lock mechanism . but a regular frame lock crk is not really in my opinion best engineered, per the title of the thread.

Frame Lock....like those? See many around?
AKA R.I.L or REEVE Integral Lock....

SOG Fatcat strikes me as exceptional. I particularly love the Kraton grips and the arc-lock, both of which you would hardly ever see on customs.

Supposedly 8 ounces heavy, but in fact 5 ounces something (weird negative advertising it seems): Incredibly light for the size...

Bank vault doesn't quite begin to convey the feeling of it locking: I did not even test the blade for play: That is how pointless it seems...

The handle ergonomics are so great the absence of pocket clip is actually a very good thing, as anything extra on the handle would have compromised the strong positive impression the handle makes. The pouch is a great simple device to get around the lack of clip imho.

The edge needs a re-worked angle but all such knives do. REK did for me a fantastic job on the recurve edge, that recurved edge being the only bad useless feature of the whole knife... Touch ups by sharpening rod only I guess...

A bit too much bling and over-designing, but I just love the way the Kraton is done: The Kraton and lock by themselves are worth the price...

Everything about this knife. The Lg Inkosi CF by CRK.
Simplicity, Quality, Tolerances, Innovation, Size, Pivot, Width, Blade Profile, Ergonomics, Length-weight ratio, Lockup, Detent, Angle of the clip, Materials. Everything about this knife was thought out and executed beautifully.

The most solid 3.5" folder I have ever held and it only weights 4oz.

That SOG looks really nice. I get the impression that it is built like a tank. I think spyderco sage series is also a top design. I own the spyderco sage 3. I think my next knife will be a small sebenza. Are there any other top quality well designed knives anyone would like to nominate?

Hi! I also think that design, engineering, manufacturing and quality are different things. In many companies, in fact, design belong to designers :) and product developers (idea, shapes, materials, etc.), engineering belongs to R&D; manufacturing to production and quality... well, to quality :). Sure they have to get together at the end of the day, to meet the customers with a good product, but they are different things, IMO.

For example, I see all the different folding knives' locking mechanisms as the result of some kind of engineering activities; the precise and tight tolerances as the result of a manufacturing excellence; a non-compliance rate in the range of ppm as the result of a good quality system. Instead “iconic” shapes and forms, choice of materials, textures, “feel”, surfaces, colurs, etc. are, in my opinion, the result of combined efforts from designers and product developers.

From a purely engineering point of view I agree with having the SAKs up there, a smart idea, utilitarian design and a successful industrialization, still fresh after more than a century . Lately I am admired by Lionsteel engineering with the solid handle concept and their smart engineering solutions also in products other than knives (e.g. pens) – and that’s not just because they are an Italian company! :p
