Recommendation? Best/Favorite Knife To Break Auto Glass?

FWIW, I'm a retired medic and all I carry are shears and a Benchmade strap cutter.

A center punch is also a great tool to carry. Personally, I feel it's the best route to go breaking auto glass. Much better than a knife. I gave my punch away and that's the only reason I don't carry one with all the other stuff in my Jeep.

If you really feel that you need a knife to break glass, go try it in a wrecking yard but, try a center punch first. Make sure you wear gloves and long sleeves when you do this. Glass can go everywhere if you're not careful. Safety glasses would be a good idea, too. A first aid kit might also be helpful.

After all of that, if you still want a knife to break glass, look at the Victorinox Rescue Knife. Watch Vic's youtube video, too.

Please let us know what you end up with.:)

If you want a knife, there is the Spyderco Assist. It is a step above the Spyderco Rescue, because it has a retractable window punch built in. Around $75

Center consoles and glove boxes fly open all the time. A short length of cable with large eyes/loops on each end. You can loop it around the driver's side seat mounting bracket/support beneath you. Put the tool of choice on the cable (such as a ResQMe), and attach the eyes together with a small carabiner. Always within reach, but as secure as you can get within reason.

That would be my approach if I had one. I wonder after a serious accident, you're usually really shaken up and perhaps in shock. Don't know if storing a punch anywhere would be a much help.

I recall an accident I was involved in years ago at night.... could have killed me. But, I was essentially uninjured. The first thing I did after crawling out of the window was grab my camera to document the scene..... I am conditioned to take pictures and do it all the time..... pictures were all essentially black with a few little points of light being brake lights and so forth. I wasn't thinking very well at the time....

Been seeing advertisements for breaking glass if you have to when a un-responsive child is inside a parked car in the summer heat.

I keep a Boker Magnum with glass breaker and seatbelt cutter in the glovebox. Also a tacticool pen with glass breaker.

I keep a Mora and a Husqvarna hatchet in my driver's side door pocket. Not for rescue purposes but because I camp a lot. I suppose if I needed to get out they would be there. I am sure I could break a window or cut a belt with them.

I also have a Kershaw Funxion EMT, model 8100, in my ashtray. It definitely isn't going anywhere in there. It fit's in there pretty snug and the ashtray takes a bit of force to open and close. I cannot say I would actually recommend the knife but it should work just fine. I keep it in there because it was a gift. I would recommend the ashtray as a secure place to keep it.
