Best FFG (full flat grind) folders?

What I don't understand with his videos, is why does he do things to defeat/break the lock at the beginning and then do the rest of his tests. I'm waiting for a blade to collapse and take a finger off. It seems like breaking the lock would be reserved for the end.

As for a knife, is a HFG (High Flat Grind) OK? If so, check out the Benchmade 950 Rift.

oh. here's why I'm afraid of spydercos: skip to 24 minutes:

Utter nonsense. Sure..if you try to break a knife...you can break it. You think the same wouldn't happen with the RAT-1 you like so much? Silliness.

As for best full flat...I go Opinel. (Though they may be slightly full convex.) Purest full flat slicer out there, and that is what a full flat blade is built to do. Slice.

You saw a cheap Spyderco go through all of that and you are afraid of them?? If anything it makes me want another one. lol

Well the point is that spydercos have a huge freakin hole in the blade, which creates a major weak point. Not that I would ever abuse a knife like that. It's just nice to know that a knife will definitely hold up to some minor amount of torsional stress should you be in a situation that required you to hard use it. What's so great about a spyderhole when a thumb stud works well?

Todd Rexford makes full flat ground folders. Pick up an Injection.

In my experience thumb holes work better than thumb studs, especially when wearing gloves or with wet hands.

So you are saying that Spyderco failed because of the hole in the blade, and that your RAT-1, without a hole, would have stood up to that treatment?!?

He was TRYING to break it, I wouldn't call that minor torsional stress. Thumb studs have their drawbacks too. They can get hung up if you need to slice something using the whole length of the blade. If you want a slicer a FFG is a great choice. If you want hard use you will be giving up some of that performance. There is no perfect knife for all situations.

Maybe try to find a flipper without either?

Spiderco leaf shaped FFG, nothing better than an all belly blade for slicing and controlled carving with the slender tip, but it's still wide enough to avoid breakage, well unless you intend on breaking it. Where thumb studs act as a stop ala ZT300, they stay out of the way, but on some like Emersons disk or CS wave plate where the disk/plate sits about 1/2" down the spine from the handle, it can catch, especially with food prep, the Spider hole opens smooth and easy, fast and controlled, and not only is there nothing hanging out of the blade to dig into something like a block of cheese, it acts to break the vaccum when slicing.

This video proves nothing other than the fact that this individual is incapable of selecting the right tool for the job.

Want to baton? Buy a fixed blade.

Any knife can be broken under the right circumstances.

You're 100% right. You shouldn't buy Spydercos, they are the worst knives on the market. I've broken 3 of them just this week right through the stupid round hole. One was just from the pressure of my thumb flipping it open. At least the other two failed from hard use; opening an envelope and sharpening a pencil.

chemistguy, I am not impressed with 'torture tests', particularly when done in some foreign language. :)

Native 5 is a pretty amazing cutter/slicer. Steel is S35VN

I ... haven't tried any Spydercos yet.

Let me get this straight, you have not even tried any Spyderco knives,

...yet based on some lame brain doing stupid things in a video you have written the brand off.

IMHO, you don't deserve a knife as nice as a Spyderco. :thumbdn:  :thumbdn:

I once bent a 1 inch diameter extra large prybar into an bowed L-shape... Granted it took a tractor to do it but the point stands, you can break any tool with abuse.
