What's the best field sharpening stone for general sharpening of both folders and fixed blades under 5 inches (think Morakniv)?

How is the Spyderco Double Stuff?

I use the DMT dia-fold ones. XC/C or C/F depending on what you expect to be able to do with it. But one of those plus a doublestuff is what I keep in my camping gear.

The DMT Diafolds are great. Also check out the Falkniven DC4. It's a small double sided stone w/ diamond and ceramic sides. Good for touch ups and a little more serious resharpening. It also comes with a leather slip cover. I use the cover w/ the stone inside as a makeshift strop. You can usually find the DC4 for under $20.

Do you think they are both necessary? Would the Diafold be sufficient by itself?

May not be for everyone but I have a couple for field use and like them alot for that use.

Check out the Work Sharp Field Shapener ... they have a couple models now but gives you a couple different diamond plates with a guide for angle and a ceramic rod with different grits as its turned. and even a small leather strip for a strop.

The new model has more features and with a small accessory kit for it gives you 4 Diamond plates of varying courseness ... with a 17 or 20 degree guide and still offers the ceramic and a leather strop on a plate.

I like them alot for a field touch up and could be used for more with the newer model.

Sure. The C/F leaves a perfectly good 600-ish grit edge. You aren't push-cutting newsprint in the field, so maybe you don't need a polished edge.

But if what you're doing is whittling wood around a campfire with a 1095 GEC, and it gets dulled somehow, then you will appreciate the doublestuff for a much finer touch up than a DMT F can achieve.

It's all in what you expect to be able to do.

Honestly I use one of my sharpmaker medium grit stone which i broke in half like a moron.

As long as the edges were set properly in the first place then it doesna great job touching the edge back up. Grinding a new edge? Forget it.

The Work Sharp looks phenomenal- perhaps slightly more versatile than the Diafold?

The worksharp is awesome. It allows some refinement of the edge. You get two diamond plates, a ceramic rod and built in strop. The plates are removable too.

I think you'll like the Work Sharp for a field sharpener its hard to beat with all the options. It's really handy and simple to use. And not very expensive.

I have had one of those DMT double sided folding sharpeners for over 10 years and are easy to carry and are long enough to put a edge on my knives.

I order one of those double sided diamond sharpeners plates 7" 600/1200 grit for AliExpress waiting for delivery to see if it`s a waste of money.

John.

A Sharpmaker is small, light weight, and works, easily. If you are just touching up there are a few key ring stones around for very quick tough ups.
