Best fighter under $200?

I started to call this thread, best factory fighter, but then realized that there are a few custom fighters priced under $200. For example, there is the Greco Probus.

Whenever I see threads on the subject of "best fighter", the knives that get mentioned are usually the high priced customs. So I think it would be useful to know what good knives are available that are more affordable than Striders, Randalls, etc.

So, for under $200, is it possible to get a good fighting knife? I would say the Greco and Mineral Mountain offerings would qualify, and maybe the Ontario Bagwell Bowies.

There are a ton of good 'fighters' for under $200 depending on your size and style preferences. I'm assuming you are only thinking of fixed-blades, like the Ontario Bagwells that you mentioned. Some others include:

CRKT Polkowski/Kasper Companion
Cold Steel Black Bear Classic (and many others!)
Boker Applegate/Fairbairn
Next Generation KA-BARs
Etc.

The more I think about it, there really is a huge selection available nowadays - it just depends on exactly what you are looking for. If you can get a little more specific (in terms of size limits, blade design, etc.) I'm sure we could come up with a lot more examples of what you had in mind.

I didn't really have any specific style or size in mind. Since the threads I had found on the subject of fighting knives tended to focus on expensive customs, I decided to ask what was available in the under $200 category.

I suppose there might be some folks with opinions on the best blade length and blade profile for a fighting knife.

Hopefully I'll never end up in a knife fight with any knife, but if I had to pick a fighting knife, I'd get a Fällkniven Garm (G-1)

It is a lot smaller than a Bagwell Bowie, but it is a true fighter that means business!
An other good option might be Camillus' excellent Close Quarters Combat knife. Both are a good deal under $ 200,-

If you act quick, you could bet a Busse Killer B for only 167.00. Busse is a really good brand (though I'm not sure if their considered semi-production or not). It's got a 4" blade, and a traditional blade shape. It's also wrapped in a Japanese style with black webbing over yellow slabs. I'm sure it'd be worth checking out, but they're getting rid of the knife, so you probably would have to act quickly to get one. Just my 2 cents.

Hi Beck,
I just got my Mineral Mountain White River Bowie in the mail the other day. WOW:D If I had to take a knife to a knife fight it is the one. Check out Ted Frizzell's knives at http://www.plan-a.org/mmhw
John Gonzales is the dealer and he is cool to deal with.
Stay Sharp,
Wali

I have looked for a knife in this segment for a while, there are plently of good field knives and large fighters in this catagory but i have been unable to find one that was the right size and style to be a useful fighter for my lifestyle (civilian).

Kershaw vertigo looks promising. And i would get the Camilius CQB knives if i could get the small blade on the large handle, and now we have the Busse Public defender. The Greco's look like good values as well, i especially like the recon.

I think you really do have to go custom on this issue, since none of these knives is my ideal fighter.

Kabar #1272 Next Generation Fighter. Street price slightly over $100.00 You have to feel how light and balanced it is in hand to believe it.

I guess Moving Target had a good point about this subject being very broad, as there has already been a range of suggestions from a huge MMHW Bowie to the AFCK folder! Still, it is good to know what is out there in the various size options.

I think there have been some concerns about the Ontario Bagwell Bowies as they are made from some mysterious proprietary stainless steel. Generally, when it comes to long blades, I have read some concerns about stainless steels being too brittle. Although I am not sure at what blade length one ought to switch to carbon steel.

Does anyone have any views about the stainless Ontario blades?

Folders:
Trained person- Gerber Covert
Untrained person- Spyderco Civilian

Fixed:
virtually anything goes!

Hello Rob,

When would I be able to order a Nordooh from you and what are you asking for one these days ?

So, for under $200, is it possible to get a good fighting knife?

yes the Simonich Midtech Urban Raven :D

A very big recomedation for the Camillus CQB1, absolutely love mine.

Kabar works great.

Got to plug my boy's Newt Livesay and Bill Siegle.
Both custom and both tasty and both remarkably under 200 buckers!
Those two guys know how to make a fighter.
Cant wait for my Livesay AK to get here.

well, a Trailmaster would do a nice job of fending off baddies, but you're not likely to tote one of those around with you everywhere in civilian life. So comfort and concealability are issues to consider. How about the Spyderco Fred Periin street bowie" 5" of flat-ground VG10 steel that is easy to carry, and has and index finger cutout for a secure grip. I wouldn't want to walk into the Riddle of Steel with it, but for the real world it seems like a great option.

How about a Newt Livesay company knife (I think that's what it's called); they are listed at $150.
