Please excuse my ignorance but could one of yopu guys explain what a mische rod is and how it differes from a fire steel. As I tried to google it and nothing comes back.

AFAIK, it's very similar. Hopefully some of the experts can shed some more light on the subject. You can get misch metal at goinggear.com I don't know where else you can get it for sure.
Imbhami - I believe misch metal type rods have a higher magnesium content than a standard ferro rod and seem to be much denser too.The sparks produced are hot little molten globs that burn hotter and have a longer burn time than the sparks made by a standard ferro. It can sometimes be more difficult to throw sparks with these type of rods because they require a very sharp edge to strike . That is why it is is considered by some to be a last ditch / emergency fire starter.

I just got my order from Goingear, I placed it a couple days ago, and recieved it yesterday. I am really happy to have a new supplier of the Misch metal! I got 11 of them, and have already put antler (blacktail) handles on them. They produce a great spark. Very happy with Goinggear!
