Hi,

I love my X-ray Vision so much, that i want to get a fullsize SOG. whats the best out there? In comparison to say, the Ontario Freedom Fighters, or Ka-Bar next generation, or the such? What would be the best competition to a standard Ka-Bar?

Hi ReconTech,
You'll probably get as many different answers as people responding...:D  ;)
What is it you want the knife for? For camping/ outdoors type stuff? Self Defense? Mostly just to sit and look good?
In any of those categories, there is a SOG knife:D   ...
Question 2, is what price range are you looking at?

Personally? I have a soft spot for the SOG Bowie, the flag ship  It's not cheap, but it's a beautiful knife!!!

The S37, SEAL Knife 2000, is quite a nice knife. It is built much better than I expected. I can't compare it to the Bowie, since I haven't handled the Bowie.

The caveat is that I haven't used it for much serious use. It came much sharper than I typically get from a production knife. I don't particularly like the kydex sheath, but my objections are aesthetic and not functional (here's a quote from their website on their sheaths):

"Most of our fixed blades come standard in all-weather Kydex sheaths. This line of patent pending scabbards has been carefully thought out and designed to exceed previous standards. They are jump rated, quiet with minimal rattle, contain rub strips to minimize wear of the knife and its coating, have rigid belt loops for easier one-handed extraction, are ambidextrous, are easier to use, and are military belt certified with a device that fits over the belt and snaps. They also contain weep holes for water drainage."

ReconTech,

I can't help but think the SOG Bowie is one of the most incredibly good-looking knives around, I have mine sitting on the end of my dining room table so I can look at it every time I walk past. I would have to say it is my favorite SOG fixed-blade knife.

When I received it (bought it as a Factory 2nd direct from SOG) the blade was sharper than any knife I had ever experienced in my life. And I've been able to easily maintain that sharpness.

I like the blade thickness of a measured 0.273" for durability when doing all those "things" knife blades aren't supposed to do.

The feel and heft and balance are fantastic. Visually the knife almost seems small and "dainty" even though there is over 6" of blade. The handle is small which is what I think gives that visual impression, but (again) the fit and feel in the hand are fantastic. It is a sleek and effective tool and weapon.

And best of all, it is a most impressive "conversation starter" steak knife for dinner !!

So I'm like Bobby B: the Bowie is for me !!

Cheers,

Carl

That would have to be the Trident.

Now, if you are looking for "the best competition to a standard Ka-Bar", that would be the Seal 2000 as they are roughly the same size, with basically the same blade-style.

The SOG Trident is essentially an AUS 8 stainless Bowie with a micarta handle. It too is a beautiful knife!:D

Most of my SOGs are fixed baldes and I like them all. The irony is that most of the ones that I have acquired in th elast 2 years are already discontinued but that could be of some value to me in the fututre. I have a Tech 1, Government Agent, Tsunami and X42 Recondo.

If I must rate my favourite amongst the bunch then I'm going to say it's the Tech 1, which is very similar to the Seal 2000 except it has a brass gauard and doesn't have the bead blasting. Profiles are very similar. When I can scrape together some more money later in the year I'm going to go after a Seal 2000.

So get yourself a Seal 2000 :D If you want something cool that is a bit cheaper and of which stocks are running out, then get a Tsunami. I rate it as one of the most underrrated defensive type knives out there. (I say underrated because nobody ever recommends it for anything.) Get your hands on one and you'll see why.

Good luck with the selection.

The Navy Seal 2000 is an excellent outdoor, camping, day-hike, fishing, hunting knife.

What would be the best competition to a standard Ka-Bar?

Not sure any of the SOGs are really a great comparison to the 'standard' Ka-bar. Any of the SOG fixed blades will definitely be stronger through the tang and the Kraton and Zytel handles are certainly more weather resistant than the stacked leather handles of a Ka-Bar.

Another thing to note is that 1095 will not hold the greatest edge. Easy to sharpen but also dulls rather easily in my experience.

My Ka-bar is a good performer and solid knife at its price point but in comparison to a SOG (my experience is mainly with a Seal 2000), taking only performance into account, I think that SOG would win this battle.

I always enjoy looking back a year and seeing what was going on.

This thread is of interest to me because I'm a fixed-blade kinda guy, and the pictures are fantastic.

SO.... a year has zoomed by. Any new knowledge and/or comments to share regarding your favorite fixed blade SOG ??

Cheers,

Carl

Carl, you are soooooo mean. :grumpy::p lol. Was about to post my recomendation when I noticed it was an old thread. Oh well, think I'll do it any way. lol

I think the SOG SEAL 2000 would compete nicely with a Kabar. They are both about 12" long, a clip point blade and both come in a Stainless steel (Next Gen version for the Kabar).

SOG Nite Tech, 15 years old, just like the SOG tech but with Blued Carbon steel, who doesnt love carbon steel?

the Nite Tech ?? I've not heard of that model, which Tech model is it like ??

I most heartily agree with carbon steel. My Tigershark has the SK-5 carbon steel blade and last year I went crazy and gun-blued it..... it looks great !!

Cheers,

Carl
