I am looking for a fixed for mainly utility use. I will be carring it every day and I do alot of hiking on weekends in the woods. I would like it to double as a back up for defense. Any suggestions on what, why, and where I can get it?

Thanks,

shane

When I think of a fixed blade utility knife, only one blade comes to mind: BUSSE MEAN STREET!

Which Dozier would you recommend? If there are other recommendations what model do you recommend?

Thanks

This is a slightly shortened version of the Carbon V Trail Master Bowie. It has a blade that is 7&1/2 inches long, and 5/16 inch THICK!

I have one, and I feel that it is an EXCELLENT knife for either "field use",
or as a defensive/offensive knife.

For excellent knives at a extremly low price you can't beat Newt Livesay's knives http://members.tripod.com/~Newt_Livesay/index.html I've got one of his Custom Air Assaults and love it. Here is a review on them by Chad234, http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/002076.html My Air Assault will be acompanying me on a upcomming deployment to the UAE. It's got a nice home on my LBE in a BlackHawk sheath. (normal AA's do not fit in the BH sheath, only custom ones)

I'm also ordering a Trace Rinaldi custom Warhawk to take with me. http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/002076.html I orginally wanted a Tempest but it's imposible to get one right now. Check out Trace's web site and take a good look at the Tempest. http://www.pe.net/~thrblade/ Trace also makes custom Kydex sheaths for just about any application you can think up.

A Ka-Bar

"What!?!? No!! Get that low-brow bohemian out of here!"

Hear me out brothers (and sisters if any). I believe the Ka-Bar is now being offered in D-2? That would be a wonderful steel to use (albeit a little care is needed to ensure that it doesn't rust, but no more than what is needed for all the other usual types of steels anyway). And even if you don't get it in D-2, I've found from personal experience, that the old Ka-Bar is a very good knife for what is costs. Had it with me for about 2 years whilst in the army and used it extensively. The edge held out for what I judged was a reasonable time, and came back sharp quite easily. And of course the big plus was that I knew I could use it without reservations because it was easily available and could be replaced cheaply.

Where can you get it? Practically all on-line dealers carry it.

Any other suggestions? What type of Dozier? I like the Trace Rinaldi TTKK and the Spook. Which one would you recommend?

Thanks

Shane,

Bob Dozier makes some fantastic knives, as has already been stated in this thread. I think any of the following Dozier models would work well for you:
* Personal
* Slim Outdoorsman
* Yukon Pro Skinner
* Agent

His blade grinds are lengendary, his handles ergonomic & comfortable, his sheaths some of the best around. A tremendous value. You can't go wrong with any of Bob's knives. The other makers and brands listed here are all very good knives. Bob's would be better at hunting related duties than all but the Fallkniven H1 or F1 (IMHO).

Best of luck!

How about the Dozier Pro Guide? I think AG Russell has them.

I love Bob Doziers work. THe Mean street is a little heavy for a 3.5 inch blade knife. For my money a true hand made custom for under 200.00 forged you just can not beat BeKnives. Bruce Evans is a gentleman and first rate guy to deal with his prices are on the silly side of reasonable and he gets you a knife in short order. Nothing like hammered steel in my opinion. I own two of his blades and have just put in an order for two more. The last one he did for me can be seen here http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=743108&a=7820933

A boot that he made for me is on my home page.

You are not limited to what you see there but at least it might give you some ideas.

One of the 4 inch Chris reeves One Piece Range knives will suit you just fine. They are great knives.

One of the 4 inch Chris Reeves One Piece Range knives will suit you just fine. They are great knives and are really meant to be users. The company stands behind their product 110% and has really good people who value customers. Can't say enough good about them and their knives.

I have to go along with Dozier. I've got the jigged bone Slim Outdoorsman, and micarta Yukon Pro Skinner and Pro Guide, and I love all of them.

Oh, and I've also got his clip point neck knife, and his Canoe Knife with giraffe bone handles.

The Slim Outdoorsman and Canoe knives may be a little small to do double duty as "defensive" knives, but they're wonderful all-around utility blades.

If Rob Simonich were still taking orders, I'd recommend his Cetan, too..., but I'm not sure where his prices are these days.

I'll add my vote for one of the Doziers. He has several Models with blades in the 3"-5" range that are meant for everday Camp use that could also double as a good defensive weapon.

What you receive for the price Bob charges just can't be beat! He has been making knives longer than most have been collecting. No doubt that there are lots of custom knives available that are produced with a lower Quality steel than D2, and thus they cost a bit less, but in the long run the Doziers are worth the extra money and I'm positive that if you purchase a knife from Bob you'll thank yourself for it.

It dosen't matter how much you have to spend, go with a Dozier. His knives take an unbeleivable edge and hold it for a long time. Bob will also do custom work - I have had 3 knives (all fighters) made by Bob of my own design. As long as he approves of the design he will make it, and the prices are reasonable.
