I used to not carry a flashlight either, until I realized how much I needed one, and also how powerful white light can be. That's when I went and bought a $30 S&W light 100 lumens, etc and it served me well. I carried it every day, but then my EDC began to grow larger and I started realizing that the light lost it's place among my EDC because I wasn't out at night enough. Now, I only carry a light when I'm going out at night or plan to be out long enough for it to turn to night. The S&W light has a lifetime warranty, but for around the same price you could get a Surefire G2 and it would be more reliable. Sure, the G2 isn't LED nor near 100 lumens, but it's alot tougher light. Nowadays, I have a G2, the S&W light, and another cheapy that runs on CR123s, but still most of the time the S&W sees time as my EDC than the G2.
Edit:Good thing about the S&W, it runs on AA's. The G2 is a CR123 light.
Knives, is a different story. I can never pick which one I want to carry that day. Here lately, I've even went as far as carrying up to 3 knives on me as EDC. My advice though is to get a very small light. Try a Streamlight Stylus. I heard they are pretty bright, and the main factor is weight. Once you start carrying around alot of items, you really start to notice it and it begins to get uncomfortable. The Stylus is thin and light, take a look at it.
