Best "flipping action"?

I have a large sebenza 21 Carbon Fiber. My first CRK and was used. But it just came back from the CRK Spa and was in new condition. I was wondering if my action was normal as well. There is tension on the pivot but buttery smooth and hydraulic feeling. Really hurts my thumb to try and flick it open with no wrist. Once in a while i would get it but it hurt too much doing it enough times to work. With some wrist i can get it to flick out. But this doesn't bother me enough since it is very satisfying to open it manually with the stud. I like to move it very slowly into the lock up, it is very satisfying.

My opinion on the free action or one with more tension. In the past i've screwed up knives trying to adjust them. It didn't bother me so much since they were cheap knives. One was a Cryo II that i took the spring assist out and ended up bending the frame lock so now it barely locks the knife up. I won't even try to loosen a screw on this sebenza. Anything I want done will be sent to the factory for them to adjust and refinish/replace. I already see the blue thumb stub wearing off at the tip and turn silver. I'll send it in and let them do it and check the tension on the pivot. I see that they are so well crafted and made to be disassembled and put back together like it was new from the factory. They give you the hex driver in the box for that reason. But i just don't want to mess with it.

I heard some light sanding of the phosphur bronze washers on a fine sharpening stone, clean it all up and reapply the grease and you're good to go. Some put different grease that gives a more free pivot. Again i'm just afraid to touch it. And i also think that since CRK grinds the washers down until the pivot/lock up is perfect, i feel like you might remove enough metal to effect the pivot and create some play.

I have one small 21 that feels like glass and drops freely when you unlock it. And, I have another small 21 that is the opposite. It feels sluggish and tight and does not drop at all. Both are easy to flick open with no wrist. Kind of funny.

Glad you went back to the Umnumzaan as that was the one I would have recommended. It can, occasionally take some adjustment of the pivot, but not much. What I like is that I don't have to use a lot of force so I can actually flip it gently. I don't need to it to shoot out like a rocket, but I enjoy just flicking my thumb a little to deploy.

I've got it worked out that I am simply sliding the pad of my thumb along the edge of the presentation-side scale, with the pad of my thumb on the stud. After a certain amount of pressure the knife kind of "pops" open, gently. With my firs 'zaan I about wore out my poor thumb and never did figure it out.

I bought a brand new Large Micarta 21 Tanto and it falls free now, it "flicks" like a rocket and is the smoothest knife anyone I know has ever handled.

All my Umnums fire out with the right amount of pre-load applied to the thumb lug and proper tension on the pivot.

Ultimately all of them can be flicked, either break them in or tune them right.

im thinking about getting a zaan myself LOL found a few leftie zaans...

Just got my first 2 CRKs couple weeks ago. 21 large tanto and a CF large 25. Both are great flickers!

That's encouraging to hear because I have never owned a 21 or 25 which was an easy flicker, hence as to why they're long gone because they were unable to satisfy my flicking ODC! I said encouraging because I'm hoping that after my CF/Ti L21 comes back from Boise (warranty work: off centered blade issue rubbing the CF scale), it will make me to luv it enough for me to wish to keep it. Otherwise, my CRK folder crusade will be limited to my only CRK in the hands: the Star-Tac Zaan which is both a great flicker and a great folder.

My CF 25 flicks out with a really nice CLACK on lock up!! I also like the double studs!

Umnumzaan for sure. I am not a flicker fan, but both my Zaans can be flicked open effortlessly. Plus, the o-rings absorb the shock. Good stuff if you like to do that. :)
+1 My Zaan flicks open pretty nicely now that my thumb is trained. It takes a bit of practice to get it down but, once you do it flicks open with ease. I like to put a bit of tension on the stud by pushing forward (some direction as the handle) and then push upwards to release the tension. It results in a satisfying flick.

Inkosi/Sebenza 25 has action like the Zaan. The heavier blade gives it more flicking authority.

I've also gotten my Sebenza's to flick more freely by carefully polishing the washers. 2000 grit sandpaper followed by 3000 and 5000 grit Trizac pads does really well.
If you have a strop you don't need the Trizak. I have both and the Trizak tends to contour the edges. It is best to use 2000 grit and then a strop until it is shiny.

I can flick my CRKs open, but prefer to just thumb it all the way to lockup. Hell, on my Inkosingo or 25, I can even do the birdie finger Spydie flick, but still prefer to thumb it.

I don't flick my CRKs I kind of like the smooth opening and feeling that vault lockup as it reaches that full open point.

But I finally talked myself into a Umnumzaan ... or bhyde and lone wolfe posting beautiful pictures finally convinced me and I was told to not give up they were hard to open but would break in ... but the Zaan is by far the smoothest fresh out of the box CRK I own it was like butter took me three days to put it down ...

I have no doubt it would flick open if I wanted to do that ... also found the CRK/Wilson Combat Inkosi I bought is nearly as smooth.

But for some reason I really prefer to thumb them open and feel the lockup ... maybe other flippers have worn out the novelty of it for me.

Me too. That's what makes a CRK special, is that hydraulic open and closing action!
