best folder as a weapon.

i have the SOG Pentagon Elite 2 ( PE 18 ) and i would like to upgrade it.

i like the size and thickness of the blade but the handle doesnt inspire as much confidence because its plastic and steel, not titanium. also opening the knife with one hand is NOT trivial, which i dont like AT ALL. and lastly i would like something that slips in the pocket more readily (lower profile handle).

assisted opening and/or blade thats sharp on both sides would be big pluses !

what is out there for me ?

As I understand your post, for a dedicated weapon/fighter design, I don't know your budget and can only recommend those that have some length to it plus a dedicated shape, have a look at the Crawford Perfigo or the large offerings of Darrel Ralph.

For the lower end, production ones, see the BM 710 and the Spyderco Chinook. Hope that helps.

I'd consider how well a knife fits your hand to be the most important factor, if the knife isn't to be used for cutting on a regular basis, and hence edge retention isn't a major factor. I'd visit a knife retailer and find what fits well in your hand. I'd start with the knives that have at least a groove for your index finger, and narrow it down from there.

I would suggest a Chinook II...hard to beat for the money.

The North American Arms mini revolvers with the folding handles. As their ad copy states, 'locks like a knife'.

Edited to add: Not trying to be a wiseguy here, but any discussion of self defense tools needs to include the legality of it all. Concealed pistol licenses are easier than ever to obtain; Double edged knives are trouble just about anywhere, and there are blade length considerations. In the event you ever have to use your knife in self-defense, you will be taken into custody, there will be an in depth invesigation. There is now, on the web, a record of you seeking the best 'weapon' to carry (concealed).

hm ... well i live in new york state, how easy would it be to obtain a licence to carry a firearm for me ? none of my friends have it so i assume not very easy ?

Another vote for the Spyderco Chinook II.

Some other possibles:

CRKT BladeLock
CRKT M16 or M21 series
Spyderco SS Endura
Spyderco Manix

Good luck,
Allen.

Best folder for a weapon? Right here is my pick. I'm with Textoothpck. I have one of these. Great little swiss clock workin' piece of machined technology here.

i'd say anything with an axis lock, lots of choices,as that is probably the strongest folding knife locking mechanism.my personal choice would be an emerson commander

Truthfully if you are fighting or defending with a folder it would be a last resort kind of thing IMO. Something like an XL Cold Steel Vaquero Grande comes to mind as a great choice. Mine sports a 6" recurved Nogales blade and is 13 and 1/4" long open. That is almost like carrying a short sword.

Should do the job for sure.

If you plan on using a stab attack then I would avoid traditional lockbacks. I've "thrown " several models and many times the lock had disengaged upon contact with the target. I really can't speak for the higher end lockbacks like a Spydey Manix or Extrema Ratio Nemesis. All of the models that I've tested had zytel/Frn handles or wood/brass bolsters. I believe that the Cold Steel Proof video also shows some of the lockbacks closing upon cotact when thrown at a target. Don't quote me on that. I haven't watched the video in quite some time now. I'll have to check it out again soon. Something to consider.

You should find out what blade lengths and types are legal where you live. Double-edged blades seem to be against the law in most places. Length limits vary widely.

My first picks would be either the Camillus Aftermath (which I EDC) or Maxx Bowie (which I used to EDC). However, both feature 5-1/2" blades that may be too long for you.

My second choice would be the Camillus Dominator.

All three of the Camillus models will accept an aftermarket pocket clip that makes them ride very low. You can buy the low-profile clips for a few bucks through KnifeKits.com.

Pretty much impossible from what I've heard.

The Peoples Republic of New York frowns on the 2nd amendment.

Any knife that is sharp and you don't use it for any other cutting during daily chores. If you must use a knife as a weapon (which I frown upon) I would buy something cheap and strong. Either an Endura, or a Emerson Hard Wear. Keep your nice knives as usable EDC's. I don't carry a knife as a weapon but as a tool for general chores, but then again if it gets dull in a day's work and I need to defend myself I use my hands. That or if Barrabas74 (JP) is with me, I just let him beat them up. ;)

It can't be any worse than here in the Peoples Republik Of Maryland. You can own guns, take them to the range, but don't get cought carrying one!

But IS legal to have a fixed blade on your belt as long as its in plain sight. Go figure that one out.

You'd be better off getting some good self defense training (with or without a knife). They are not optimal SD tools.

Yeah and balisongs are legal too. Plus in most counties there is no law against folder blade sizes. That and the Maryland Criminal Code specifically says "Any person may reasonalbly arm themselves if they percieve a threat against their life". And by law here in good ole' MD, you are givin' a chance in court to prove that you were armed for a reason that was reasonable. I have had cases dropped in court against subjects where my arrest on them with a weapons charge for concealing the weapon was overlooked because the weapon wasn't use in a crime. This usually happens when the weapon is in a vehicle, but has happened when I have arrested someone for a larceny and they had knives and or guns on them.

I am with USAFSP, in that I don't recommend a knife for SD. Have you really given this some thought? Do you KNOW how close you have to be to USE a knife in SD??
