best folder as a weapon.

i have the SOG Pentagon Elite 2 ( PE 18 ) and i would like to upgrade it.

i like the size and thickness of the blade but the handle doesnt inspire as much confidence because its plastic and steel, not titanium. also opening the knife with one hand is NOT trivial, which i dont like AT ALL. and lastly i would like something that slips in the pocket more readily (lower profile handle).

assisted opening and/or blade thats sharp on both sides would be big pluses !

what is out there for me ?

welcome to bladeforums, please try to use a knife primarily as a TOOL not a weapon.

then think along the lines of...perhaps,.... self defense..

Daggers are sharp on both side because they are on shealth, but folder sharp on both side will result in cutting your hand each time you will pick it up from your pocket...
In another side, if you are bleeding on your pants and money, that 'll ammazed any robber and give you more time to run...:)

This is my understanding of new york law on knives. You cannot carry a dagger legally. Anything that looks "dangerous" is considered a dangerous weapon.

Personally i carry a Vaquero Grande usually. Its very good at cutting and sawing chores. Plus i would hate to see the wound this thing delivers.

The downside is that it looks rather "scary" to some people and not to others. I've never had a problem but i also don't just whip it out in the middle of public either.

As an all purpose knife and self defense weapon of last resort, the Benchmade 710HS is a darn good choice.

I keep vacillating between a Spyderco Military and a Civilian. You can't stab with a Civilian, but when it comes to slashing, OH MY!!!

I live in one of only four states left with NO provision for private citizens to carry a concealed handgun, but there is reason to believe next year that it could change. Thus, I carry a SAK as an EDC, but always have a big Spyderco of some type on me that I don't use for anything, reserving its edge for more serious purposes (which thankfully hasn't happened yet, and hopefully never will).

My primary concern is dogs, but when jogging I always have pepper spray, and that has taken a few "out" so far, and I've actually had the knife out a couple of times (dogs) but didn't have to use it.

Troll Bait From Hell, Just a heads up. I am in law enforcement, and have had serveral encounters with dogs out in our County and have used pepper spray on them. Sometimes it does "take them out", other times, depending on the breed of the dog, it will cause them to become much more aggressive and continue to attack. So, again just a heads up and please be aware of some of the negative affects the pepper spray may have on dogs. This is only from some of my own experiences. The last thing you want is to have some large mutant dog coming after you, after its been sprayed, expecting the dog to turn and go the other way. Please be careful. Keep the Spyderco handy just in case.

Whatever you decide to get make sure you get the training to go along with it. If you must do it, I would suggest finding a Bram Frank Gunting from Spyderco, and then get all the videos on how to use it too.

4416,

Thanks! I have heard of this happening. Thanks for the input, and I will definitely keep it in mind.

Not sure what other good options that I have when running, but have for many a year always had the pepper spray clipped in the left pocket of the jogging shorts or sweats, and a big knife in the right. So far the spray has worked the few times I used it, and very well I might add! However, when I reach for one, I reach for the other, and though I haven't had to use the blade yet, I stand ready to feed the beast my left arm if it gets past the spray while doing my best with the right to slit its throat from ear to ear all the way to the bone.

That's the plan, anyway.;)

best folder as a weapon.

I value my fingers, and I would rather they remain attached. If you think you may be fighting with a knife then use a small fixed blade; and perferably one with a sound guard.

It is unsafe to load pressure on the back or point of a folding knife. There are plenty of good locking mechanisms on the market; but, any of these can fail. At best they are like gun safeties, an additional level of security; for those who really don't need them, and a convinience to help hold the blade in proper alignment as you position your folding knife for the cut.

There isn't a whole lot to look for in a knife fight. Usually, one guy is oblivious as the other stabs him in the back. Anything more is a duel, and those are very very rare; good thing too since it is so hard to call the winner. I guess the guy who makes it to intensive care wins.

If a knife is all you are facing, and you are not facing it at home, you may be better served by investing in a good pair of running shoes.

Some of you non-resident experts on New York State are confusing State law with New York City law. :)

Anyway, attitude, alertness, and training are worth more than the specific tool/weapon you choose to carry.

Knife duels are for morons. Life is not a video game.

Knife fighting will be up close and very fast, but if you're jumped and you can get to your knife, at least you've got something to hurt the guy with.

Self-defense means keeping yourself from harm. If you know you'll need a knife for self-defense ... don't go there.

I recommend a good EDC. Learn to use it for utility and defense. That way, you'll always have it with you, and you'll already be in the habit of reaching for it at need, and you'll be familiar with how to handle it.

The Benchmade 710 is an excellent multipurpose knife. It's got a strong lock and the blade is long enough for most work without being clumsy.

If I hd to carry a knife for SD, and I had a choice, I'd rather have my Vaquero Grande with me than a Civilian. But it's pretty big for ordinary use.
