There've been a few threads on the Tenacious and other great bargains in solid folding knives for very inexpensive prices. I'm a knife user, not a knife collector and I use my knives for the usual everyday mail, boxes, food prep but also some light construction work, whittling and brick chopping (just kidding on the last one). I have a limited knife budget and usually I come into a chunk of money that I want to buy a knife with.

So I'm curious what people think of as the best value in folders (according to the above) at the following price points. If you had a handful of cash of the following sizes, what EDC folder would you buy? $20, $40, $75, $100 (anything higher would be uncivilized).

For my very limited experience, I could say:

$20 - Kabar Dozier
$40 - Kershaw Leek
$75 - ??
$100 - ??

$40? Kershaw OD-1 and leek. Zing too.
$75--JYD II composite blade CPM D2 edge.
$100... maybe the Spec bump, some people like the BM 710. But the new ZT 0350 is around that mark and will probably be king in that range.

Yes you can justify spending over 100, and it is civilized.

for $40 all of kershaws new line up with walmart are amazing deals.

for $75 i second the jydii cb, never owned one, but everyone raves about them

for $100 i am extremely pleased with my s30v blur

as you can see, ima kershaw fan lol.

ok well here is my thoughts on those price points.

20- SAK Farmer or Pioneer Harvester
40- Kershaw OD-1
60- Benchmade Griptilian
75- Buck Cabellas 110
100- Benchmade710, ZT 350, and a few others. Over 100, maybe to 150, and you open a whole new world.

Then there are slipjoints, and they go anywhere from 10-1000 with hundreds of different handle materials and patterns. But that is a whole different level :p

my picks for value pocketknives would be...

25 - subcom

30 - tenacious, trance

50 - centofante

65 - mini grip, delica, salt 1

100 - caly3

For your price points I'd say:

$20 - Kabar Dozier, Buck Bantam (small, medium, and large)
$40 - Buck 110, a lot of kershaws, Sodbuster, Spyderco Tenacious, CRKT M-16 line-up, etc...
$75 - Benchmade Griptilians, Cold Steel Recon 1 (tough as nails), Lot's of good Kershaws at this price, Spyderco Endura, Delica, and other spyderco models, SOG Knives
$100 - SOG Vulcan, Spyderco military slightly used/second hand at this price,

There's a whole lot of knife out there for $100 or less, the possibilities are endless. I went blank as soon as I started typing :o

I've always said a benchmade griptilian is an outstanding knife to start with for under $100, it's one of the knives that got me interested in higher end products in the first place

Anything under the $40 range I would go with a Byrd model
$40- Kershaw OD-1
$50- BM Mini Griptillian
$60- Kershaw S60V Blur Blem

$60 - Benchmade Griptilian
kershaw S60V Blur factory second
$80 - tough choice, not a lot there

Folders:

$10 Opinel No. 6 or 7 or 8 in au Carbon (carbon steel blade)

$25 Buck 503 Prince from Wal-Mart before they are all sold. Great in the pocket.

$25 Spyderco Ladybug 3, it's very small but it cuts great and has good steel.

$25 Sodbuster Jr. Case makes em and others too; German, Argentine, etc

$30 Case Slimline Trapper, non locking, thumbnail nick traditional knife, like Sodbuster

$30 Kershaw Chive, Scallion or Leek.

$40 Spyderco Native from Wal-Mart before they are all sold. Fantastic knife!

$40 Kershaw Liner Action.

$56 Mini Griptilian from the interweb

$100

Emerson prices seem to go up slower than other brands. I can still get a nice slightly-used older Emersons or Benchmade/Emersons for $100 on ebay and they last such a long time that they're a good buy.

.

50 to 60 bucks - Cold Steel Recon 1
