Best folder for military?

Dear bigmonkey :

I would opt for the Spyderco "Chinook" ( not to be
confused with the helicopter of the same designation ).
It has a 3/16" thick blade ( VERY durable ), G-10 handles,
and the "tried and true" Bowie clip point, "tip down" carry,
and excellent reliability ( as compared to the switchblade ).

All Hail Spyderco !
Switchblades BAD, Spydies GOOD !

As usual, I'll propose the Al Mar SERE 2000. It looks kinda funny, because the handle seems overbuilt with respect to the blade, but I like my SERE more every time I use it. It's a liner lock, the
strongest I've ever seen on a production knife (the heavy duty handle insures that the lock will not fail even during twisting movements), and therefore the locking mechanism is very simple. The axis lock knives are very nice, but I wouldn't be inclined to use them in the field, for fear of gunking up the locking mechanism and/or breaking the omega spring. If the SERE gunks up, you just wash it out, no problem. Next to the Sebenza, the SERE, IMO, is the folder that feels most like a fixed blade. Although I like the SERE's deep pocket carry clip (less likely to get lost), I find it more convenient to carry my SERE on my belt, tip down in an old Buck 110 sheath. The fit is perfect.

Another alternative (or two):

TOPS CQT Magnum or Thunderhawke, developed in conjunction with Spec Ops SERE instructors, and DEA agents who travel in jungles a lot, who were looking for fixed blade performance in folders, for ease of carry. In 154cm to keep rust down in wet and marine environments.

The knives were continually developed, being sent back and forth from shop to field and back, until they had exactly what they wanted, based on what they ran into during operations.
