I need to buy a folding, locking knife for a friend's birthday present.

I'd like it to be under $30 street price.

I'd also like to keep it around 3 ounces or even less.

What other great knives should I consider besides the Kershaw Vapor I? (weighs 3.25 ounces).

(Spyderco's Byrd line seems like it would be ideal, except they weigh way too much! )

CRKT M16 Zytel Series.
I think the M16's are one of the best inexpensive folders out there, and you could purchase a zytel handled one on e-bay for around $30, give or take a few.
It's got admirable aesthetics, reasonable quality and functionality, and all can be had for a fair price in my opinion. No idea about the weight though...

You did'nt tell us if he was a "knife person" or not. If he is not, but he would like a good knife because he would appretiate the practicality of a good cutting tool, then I'd go with otters recomondation of the Opinel. Great cutter.

Ka-Bar Dozier-less than 20 bucks at many on line stores.

Buck 110 (best price I've seen is at K-Mart 29.95.)

I think you can get a Spyderco Delica for around $35.00

Columbia River Knife and Tool has many models in that price range. Here are two that come to mind:

Knifeworks has the CRKT Van Hoy Snap Lock for $29. It's a very unusual knife and I think it would make an excellent gift.

SMKW has the CRKT Rollock for $15. It's an interesting design also.

Happy shopping,
Bob

Two come to mind immediately that are great offerings.

1) Dozier Folding Hunter by Ka-Bar. Perhaps one of the best deals in the industry at this time. Great value and lots of bang for the bucks. About $20. Plus shipping. http://knifeoutlet.com/shop/catalog/3674.htm

2) Cold Steel Trail Guide folder. These are discontinued but Grand Praire knives and Cold Steel Special Projects still has a few left in stock. These knives are great for a number of reasons but mostly because they sport blades of the same great steel as Case used for years known as their CV steel. Carbon V and the Case CV are identical so you get a great modern day one hand opening lock back folder with the edge keeping high carbon steel that will take on the character and patina that comes with age all for around $20 plus shipping depending on the model you pick. (large or med. call to see if they still have any meds left.) http://www.gpknives.com/item/Cold-Steel-Large-Trail-Guide-Drop-Point.html

Don't forget Byrd knives. I really like their designs (as much or more than the spyderco versions) and they have some variant on 440C. Most reviews I've read said they were actually quite good.

Here's a Byrd, called the meadowlark, about 3 inches, roughly 20 dollars street.

I think they're really attractive.

The Kershaw vapor is another great value. Another 3 inch EDC potential, I really like the design, and I've never been let down by Kershaw.

If you look around you may be able to find a Spyderco Delica or Calypso Jr. at that price. For a few extra bucks you could find either of those two and it would be well worth the extra bucks.

Byrd Meadowlark. Awesome knife, I like it more and more. It sees comparable carry time to any of my far more expensive Spydies.

What Rat said.

I've got one of the Kabar Doziers and frequently carry it, even though I've got "better" knives.

It's a flat, light-carrying, strong, inexpensive folder that sharpens up easily.

I like it a lot. Will probably get a couple more for stowing here and there.

Thanks everyone...I ordered the ka-bar dozier with the hole for an opener. Hopefully my friend will like it!

He'll like that knife. Good choice. It meets all your criteria in that it is light, strong, inexpensive and locks open securely. Kabar has a pretty good customer service dept. also.
