Best folder under $400 ?????

Well I confess that I bought a Brad Duncan proto off ebay, and I know how everyone here and on most forums don't care for this fella. But that being said this knife is about the finest made folder I have ever owned bar none and I have owned some pretty nice folders in the past. So look around and decide exactly what style, blade steel and how you want it to lock up and then get that knife. keepem sharp

Wow, that's an understatement! 5 minutes on Google and I wouldn't take a knife with his name attached for free!

No offense intended, glad you love it and I'm sure the knife itself is great.

The knife may be well made but the man making them is the lowest of the low. I wouldn 't dare buy any of his knives knowing what he has done to SO many customers....

Well didn't buy it from him but a vendor so I am comfortable with it. Just a an extremely well made folder and I understand he is underhanded in his dealings with alot of folks both on the forums and probably in the general knife population. With that all being said it is probably the BEST folder I have ever handled. Fit and finish is beyond reproach and that is why I bought it and it was cheap for what it is. keepem sharp

Fair enough, I don't agree with suporting shonky operators, but I agree you should stick up for what you think :)

I'm sure the piece is great, no one seems to say any different.

Out of genuine curiousity, have you handled a CRK Sebenza or Umnumzaan, a Fallkniven PXL, Strider SNG or a Hinderer XM-18?

If so how would you compare them to the Duncan?

A hard to beat and very well made Ti frame-lock can be had for $79, if Kershawguy still has some 'blems', else it's the secondary market and a bunch more. The JYDII in Ti & SG2 blade edge, #1725SG2, is a keeper. They were well worth their list price, too. I bought one new production - and recently adde such a 'blem' - both are excellent quality, save the blem's inconsistent lamination widths from one side to the other. Both came beyond razor - closer to a microtome! Then - spend the rest on some nice Benchmades - and a book on web ettiquete. Smiley's are better!

I've had a couple of Sebbies and a Strider AR and a Strider frame lock which I forget the name for it, SNG CC or something and one other from them that was a liner lock an RC. Haven't owned a PXL or X 18 but have owned Barr's, MercWorx, Adams, Clark's, Ellishewitz, and a whole bunch more that slip my mind. Oh a couple of Lightfoot's which are on a par easily with this Duncan. The others maybe not so much. Some would show tool marks of some sort or other, blades not centering, not sharp etc. etc. Save for the sebbie's as they were pretty much perfect out of the box for build quality. Just didn't care for grip ergo's on them. Oh yea a hand ground Emerson but not a custom and ltd .ed. fixed blade from EKI. High end BM's, Spyderco's, kershaws, Bokers, CS, etc etc etc. The Duncan blows them all out of the water for quality of build and attention to detail. Lightfoot knives are the same way I have found. Anyways like I said don't care for what the builder has done to folks but I don't think this particular knife buy supported him in anyway shape or form outside of me owning a high end folder. keepem sharp

Hinderer XM-18- $385- If you don't mind the wait.

That is similar to eating tiger organs and justifying it because you aren't the one who killed the animal and they were going to kill it anyways.

The only way for him to stop screwing people over is for people to stop buying all his knives wether straight from him or second hand. As long as people are still willing to buy the scum bag's knives he will still sell them one way or another. But if it's what you want a purchase can always be justified.

As far as I am concerned my high end Benchmade and Spyderco knives don't have tool marks, all the pieces are flush, and blades centered for the most part. Plus I could care less if a knife is finished with 2000 grit instead of 600. I use the thing because it is a tool. That is why I mainly buy knives with 'super steel' these days because I want high performance not a perfect finish.

Everyone has a different compass and to each his own.

I ain't gonna start a war of words. I answered the post and I don't eat tiger organ meat. You do what you want to do and I'll do what I want to do. I am a happy camper I bought a Duncan on the secondary market plain and simple. One of the best made knives I have ever purchased.(period) I'm not justifying anything in mind but I suspect you will do that for me or something like that. Anyone who has dealt with me here or any other forum has been treated fairly and squarely. As for Duncan never dealt with him in anyway shape or form. Never spoke with him and truthfully I don't think I have ever read anything he has written. Not all the familiar with his knives outside of the fact that people that own like them. Found this one and jumped on it. Plain and simple. keepem sharp

You have already justified it to yourself and in this thread. I have a different opinion on what constitutes supporting a scumbag and a thief. I was just stating my opinion which is all these forums are. I obviously didn't say anything about your diet either.

Like I said, to each his own.

Thanks for that :)

Just searched, some of thos Lightfoot knives look interesting.

About the politics, I said how I feel about Duncan's, no need to repeat it.

I would never spend more that 200.00 for any folder on the planet so I can't say.

Just curious but would you spend it on a fixed blade? Fixed blades aren't my thing and I wouldn't spend more than that on one. I have spent a little more on a folder but only a couple times. I think that there is a lot more to a folder to make work great and feel a good folder should cost more than a fixed. Just curious.

Thanks for all the info guys...Ive made my mind up on the A.G.russell Acies. Almost every feature i wanted is in this knife..its my holy grail of folders =)

Oh, dear.

Me, I'd prefer getting a good .357 revolver and a Cold Steel Voyager, but, since you were specific, I'd have to my choice would probably be the Fallkniven PXL, as JRB suggested. I don't like pantywaist knives, or little knives that come in velvet cases. If I'm going to pay that much for a knife, I want people to pass out when they see it...or at least tell people, "Hey, you should'a seen the knife this guy had at work!"

I also respect folders that can be clipped under a good automatic rifle as a bayonet, yet fit easily in a back pocket on under the waist!

Good luck!

CRK or Strider would be my choice for your Budget that fits your needs. If you want a custom I would say double your price range and then shop around.

Hhaha ok ok i do respect both brands but its just that everybody and there grandma has one..

....and NOW you know WHY!

One large Sebenza; your problems are over/over/over.
You can find one "as-new" for less than $400 on the Exchange right here.

Check out the Dendra Defender, made by Lionsteel- It's a little beefy for me, but it's a steal, and built like a tank.
