Hi all! A question for the folder savvy: my cousin lives on small island in the south pacific and he wants me to send him a knife he can carry around. He wants a folder with a large blade. Do you have any suggestions for a large folder that can stand up to the tropical climate and salty sea water/breeze? I'm looking at a couple of spydercos (manix and salt). Anyone want to weigh-in? Thanks!

Maybe on of the MPF1 folders by Mission if you can find one. If not that the next best bet in the marine environment of an island would the only other knife I can think of that would allow him to swim, dive, wade or boat and about anything else involving daily life there would be a Salt series knife from Spyderco. The Pacific Salt would be an excellent choice and far less money than the Mission if you can even find one of the Mission knives at this point. .

SS full sized Sodbuster, perhaps?
Or maybe a large, single blade SAK, like one of the Wenger Rangers?

Do you have a budget? Here's 4 I would consider for ease of mainaining.

No 10 Slimline opinel

Chambriard, compagone, slipjoint- 3 1/2 12c27 blade all stanless fittings. Has thick pivot so liners & backstrap are easy to clean.

Boye knives are made for marine environs, lockbacks with 3 inch blades.

A G Russel's seamaster in 440c.

Good luck

Any knife from Victorinox will handle the salty sea water/breeze no problem. Here are a bunch with large blades. Otherwise, since you're posting this in the traditional forum, perhaps a stainless Case knife.

The Spyderco Pacific Salt is what I would pick. For a fixed blade, pick up a puukko with INOX blade.

Salt series from Spyderco is unbeatable for tropical/salty climate. The blades simply will not rust.

Since you are looking at some great knives that are not even remotely traditional, lets move this puppy out of the Traditional forum.

Spyderco H1 serie and Benchmade H2O serie (X15-TN steel) are rustproof. But if you want a megafolder & very hard use folder, Extrema Ratio (N690 Co) is a good option.

I travel to islands around Taiwan and Thailand quite a lot. I always take a Spyderco salt of some sort and/or a Warren Thomas full Ti/carbide knife of some sort. Those are generally not large knives but they are great for use in that sort of environment. :)

Out of curiousity...why a folder?

Seems to me, if I'm on a small tropical island: (1) there aren't going to be many restrictions on what I can carry, and (2) I'm gonna want the most reliable and long-lasting knife I can get my hands on, i.e., a fixed blade.

Is it some some of import restriction? Does he have a fixed blade already?

I concur the Spyderco Pacific Salt would be a good choice. Does your cousin have any preferences? Benchmade makes a Griptillian in H1 steel also. Either one would be a good choice.

I take that back maybe Benchmade doesn't make a folder in H1 I thought they did for some reason. Looks like the Pacific Salt would be your most bang for the buck.

Get him a 4" Cold Steel "Voyager". Their blades are stainless steel and their handles are Zytel nylon. Very tough and durable. I have EDC'd mine for about 10 years and it has been exposed to salt water, fresh water, and perspiration with no problems whatsoever. Get one of the original models online for about $65 or so.
