I'm looking for a new folder to take hunting with me. I currently use a kershaw JYDII as my backup skinner, but i'm considering upgrading

I'm looking for top quality steel (edge retention is very important) and a design that is great for skinning.

I'm mostly looking for a production knife rather than a high end custom.

thanks guys!

If you are looking at edge retention then it will be Spyderco Sprint runs in M390 and S90V in folders and the New Spyderco South Fork for a fixed blade, it's S90V.

any other thoughts on this topic? i'm not a huge fan of spiderco, so other options would be welcome

Other than customs you really aren't going to see those types of steels in knives that would be useful for what you are using them for.

So in the end it's Spyderco or Custom.

True but you're assuming it HAS to be one of those steels. Wouldn't s30v be plenty on the edge holding?

Depends on the knife AND what he is going to be using it on.

But yeah a nice Custom FB in S30V that's at high hardness and ground thin would be great.

Probably one of the Buck folding skinners. S30V with Bos designed heat treat, hollow ground and their Edge2K profile should do pretty well.

Stretch and Gayle Bradley seem like the Spydies to me that would have both well suited blade shapes and higher retention blade steel.

I did also until I learned what real performance ment....

im not a hunter so i wouldnt know, i take a 110 with me when i go cause im lucky if i go once a year.
My knives are mostly cheapies that i use at work, i like cheap reliable stuff.

If it just had to be a folder for some reason then that....

Buck also has some nice fixed blades in S30V for that use..

My dad doesn't hunt but he uses a dull knife in the kitchen and an axe that's dull enough to use the edge as brace if you stumble. Old doesn't translate to wise. Though I don't know his dad, maybe he's the smartest guy on the planet. :D

To the OP: Have you given thought to being able to take the knife apart? I don't hunt but a lot of people say that pocket knives tend to get nasty on the inside after a while. Something like a modern folder with removable scales seems like a good idea.

A buck 110 with a clip point is not the best shape for skinning.. it would work.. but expect to poke some holes.

Dozier makes an awesome skinner blade shape.. That knife is probaly 4-5x what you want to pay..

One of the main reasons why a Fixed Blade is better suited for the job

He mentioned the JYDII is a back-up, which is probably why he wants it to be a folder. Maybe he can also post what his primary is.

I was waiting to hear that too just to see what the logic was.

I use a fixed blade skinning knife for skinning.

But I do a carry a D2 folder suitable for backup.

That said, both of my D2 folders are fairly high end.

My primary is a custom D2 drop point convexed edge fixed blade made by Mike Conner.

I generally keep a backup to allow others to help me skin, or when i'm skinning 5 or 6 hogs and manage to dull my primary

ah, a loaner. Did you have any preference for handle material, lock, blade shape, one hand opening, pocket clip, and price? Some guys think a Case peanut is great for skinning, so the subjectivity is going to be far-reaching, as with any knife choice :)
