Managing a project that requires me to be on my feet 10-12 hours a night.

Had bought a pair of boots that felt great in the store, and for the first 2-3 weeks, but they ended up with hollow heals and the inner heal/sole broke through, so it was like walkin in a hole each step.

I'm a big guy, and the size 13's don't help.

Any suggestions??

I will be mostly inside, but may have to venture out now and then into the elements.

Red Wing model 402. This model comes in three different heights. I have the 8" version. Best work boots I've ever owned. All day comfort on concrete. Amazing boots.

I have to second the Red Wing advice. For 13 years I worked standing on concrete 10-12 hrs a day 5-6 days a week. The first pair I bought was actually called comfort on concrete. They are hands down the most comfortable boots I have ever worn on hard surfaces (and yes I have had danners, whites, wolverine, and a host of others). I bought them 11 years ago and still have that pair (they have been resoled a few times), I have three pairs now. I alternate pairs every other day so the off day pair has a chance to air out and decompress, the third pair is for when I send in one of the other pair for re sole so I still have two pair. The two pair is better for hygeine as well as being better for the boot. If you take care of them (oil regularly) they will last forever. Redwing will also give you new boot laces whenever you need them.

Find yourself a store that has Spenco inserts for your shoes. They come in different types from arch suport to heavy cushioning. For twenty years they were a Godsend to me working in a machine shop with concrete floors. You may have to buy your boots a little bigger though, just maybe.

Spenco's- They are salvation to those on their feet all day.

I wore privately-purchased Danner Acadias for my last ~1 year on the job. Superb boots.

As to foot comfort, get yourself some custom insoles. I had a pair of Superfeet custom insoles made for me. They were £75 ( ), but they've turned my Meindl Borneo hiking boots into slippers. They are vacuum-moulded to your foot shape in the shop.

I also wear Acadias at work. I have two pairs, one insulated and one not, for the seasons. They are great boots, durable and supportive. I've worn them for about three years now in my current assignment.

But for me they're pretty use-specific. If I was back in patrol I would not choose the Acadias. They're heavier than I would be looking for in a "standing around" application, and sprinting in them is no fun at all.

I am going to give those Superfeet a look. Thank you Maximus!

When I was a certified surgical technologist, and I STOOD for some long ass cases, I wore a pair of Merrell's. My back and knees didn't hurt.

For security work, I wear Thorogood TASAR boots, and they have been the comfy pair of boots I have ever worn. I have a 6 inch and 8 inch pair of boots. I LOVE 'em!

How much does the resoleing cost? I had a really nice set of redwings, but i tossed them because they went bald on the bottom, didnt know you could get them resoled.

Danner Boots. I wear Striker GTX ($150) at work all day. I'm a corrections officer and I stand and walk on concrete all day. A pair will last me about a year . No break it and are lightweight.

The Acadia's are great too, but much more expensive.

Same here. Danner Striker GTX (GORE-TEX) NMT (Non metallic Toe) with the side zip.

Try the strikers. They're a good deal lighter than the acadias.

I stand on concrete & steel decks for 12 hrs+ when I'm visiting a site. The best boots I've worn for minimising back and leg fatigue are Doc Martens. They are not so good for ankle support and have rolled an ankle twice when wearing them on rocky terrain - but they can't be beat on hard/flat surfaces.

Last time I had mine done, about 10 years ago, it was $65 at the Red Wing store.

I too have a pair of Danner Acadias, very nice boots indeed.

If you don't need big heavy boots though, consider some Keen boots. Keens seem to be the most comfortable shoes and/or sandals I've ever tried, and they're very well made too. They have some in mountain boot style now, like this:

Doc Martens are great. The ones I own (I now own five pairs) were good when they were brand new. They're even better when you wear them in.

The air cusion insole system Docs have are better than anything I've tried before--better than Rockports, and better than anything I've worn where one needs to wear "dress" shoes.

I also have size thirteen feet. I wear Danner Striker GTXs at work. They are great boots, but for true comfort I recommend Merrell's. If you can wear something like these jungle slides at work your feet will love you.

If you can wear casual boots at work, these Merrell Reflex Mid Gore-Tex Hiker's are very comfortable too.
