Best for camping/hiking

Dan, I agree. The AK bowie is an awesome knife and will do just about anything a camper could ask for. My only reservation against it is that @ 1.5lbs you could take a lot of khuk into the woods for that weight;) BTW, i like your SAK. I'm asking my girl to get me an XLT for our anniversery coming up next month. If she ignores my wishes (as usual) then i plan on getting one straight away. I mean right now i have to "get by" with just a discontinued swiss champion;)

Oops....guess I should have clarified.....(for anyone who hasn't seen it)

Definitely a monster....gets lots of raised eyebrows too.....:D

I like how they put a keychain ring on it. Do people actually put that monster on their keys, or is that where you tie some line to it and use it as function #52...a boat anchor:)

Let us not forget the Kumar Karda. It can be real handy around the kitchen or camp.

Think I have 3. The first didn't have a very good belt loop for us *hefty well endowed* guys putting quite a strain on it. I tried to put a different belt loop on which works but looks like sh**. I can't remember if the other two came in with much stronger frogs or if UB found one for me. I am having one of my 'senior moments' :D

I always like to have one or two knives on me for the odd task. My 'rucksak' SAK , Kumar Karda or now my latest toy/tool the 'Sarge'. Depends on what I am doing or going. The rucksak is always on me, but rotate the others, KKarda, Sarge, Bilton. Pen, 12" AK, BDC etc. I like to play with them all.

Then the others from 15 inch up and various weights. Just a pleasure to use and think about the history and workmanship put into them.

Jake that ring is actually for a lanyard so as to not lose it overboard, or anywhere else for that matter.:D ;) An excellent use for some 550 paracord which is tied on mine. My SAK is one model down from Dan's, don't have the pliers but my leatherman Super Tool makes up for that and the pliers are better anyway.:D
It also has a 550 paracord lanyard on it, tie it up with a decent length hangman's noose and you can carry a very useful amount of paracord!:D

When I was a kid, I used to go off in the woods by myself for days at a time. Everything I needed fit into a little army surplus knapsack. The only knife I took was my Boyscout pocketknife.

It makes me really wonder when I see these "hikers" with those huge backpacks that must weigh at least 60 lbs. What the hell are they carrying in there, and why?

Once again, Yvsa, you are the man:) i figured some one would be along to set me straight in my "igner't" ways:) i figured no one would need that big of a keychain knife. i do like the hangman's noose paracord idea. i'll have to try that with my xlt when i get it:)

thanks!

yeah...."keychain".....I got a kick out of that one - officially counted as one of the 50 functions of the Champ....

I have a small leather loop/knot on mine for quick-n-easy deployment.

Everything was simpler when we were kids Ben.

Check out some of the backpacker online stores Ben and you will see all sorts of goodies that a person "Just has to have!" A Google search should turn up pleanty.;)
Everything from freeze dried meals, just add water and heat, to the little backpacking stoves that heats them up and everything imaginable in between!!!! A damned good megabusiness has sprang up around the concept. Who woulda thunk it?  :D ;)
One of the good things about these people, I guess, is that everything they pack in they pack back out.
Helluva lot better than the assh*les that used to open all their cans with a knife and then leave them laying in a pile under a bush for the next campers.
You can still see these in different places here in Oklahoma:rolleyes:  and other states as well I would guess. Some damned Okies are some of the dirtiest damned people I have ever seen!:barf: :grumpy:
