best framelock for $50 or less?

I am still happy with my Trance. It bumped my Boker Subcom, being slightly larger although it's still a compact knife. Very handy, very ergonomic.

What Esav said! Hard to beat the Subcom (or variants thereof, like the Wharcom & Rescom) or Trance, which are both Boker/Magnum products, designed by fellow forumite, Chad "DAYWALKER" Los Banos. The Kershaws mentioned are also excellent suggestions. You've got the Ken Onion designed Chive, Leek, and Storm (or Storm II). You've also got the Tim Galyean designed JYDs, as well as the R.J. Martin designed Groove. Spyderco makes a few formidable frame-locks as well, like the Eric Glesser designed Spin, and of course the wonderful Cricket, both of which will be available in a new, "etched" steel design. If you're willing to wait, Spyderco has a new Byrd model, called the Catbyrd (or Catbird) that will be a frame-lock as well. I believe all of these can be found in or around your price range.

The first Subcom was a Boker Magnum but the line is now Boker Plus -- a change from 420J2 to AUS-8.

We generally approach this sort of thread with a single target in mind. But many of these suggestions are not mutually exclusive. As inexpensive AND capable as the Subcom is, I don't hesitate to recommend it, even to someone who intends to buy another knife. It is just a great casual backup.

There are other knives that fit the niche as well. The Spin is TINY but very comfortable and capable, a lot of sharp cutting edge. A small SAK also falls in this category. Think in terms of what supports your primary, heavy use knife.

I stand corrected, Esav. Both you and my Subcom, which I just looked at (it says Boker Plus), seem to be in agreement.:D Thanks for the heads up.

Just to bump this thread and ask a related question.

Does anybody have any experience with the Blackhawk Blades "Silent Partner"

Steel framelock with g-10 scales and a 440C blade. I like the design, just wondered if anybody here has actually handled one.

Kershaw Storm or Kershaw Junkyard Dog. Both of these deliver more knife than any person could ever use or need IMO. Notice that I didn't add "for the price" in there either. I would take either of these knives over many higher priced alternatives.

Having a size in mind helps reduce the choices. For something small, I love the Boker Subcom and it's variants. For something a bit larger (mid-size, 2.5"-3.3" blade), there's the Boker Trance, Kershaw Storm and StormII, Buck Mantis and Pilot and several other Bucks, Kershaw JYD. For larger yet, though it's not a "frame" lock as it has scales, the Kershaw JYDII is great. If you see one in person, you'll notice that it's liner is as thick (.070") as frame locks, so it's just as solid. It really has a BEEFY liner lock! And you can find the JYDIIs online for <$50! And it opens smooooooth!
