Which knife would you say is best for making a fuzz-stick for starting a fire? I'd use the search feature before asking this but it doesn't seem to be available anymore.

I think the Scandi grind would work best for fuzz sticks.

So, any knife with a scandi grind.

P.S. How do you use your fuzz sticks?

My SwampRat Ratmandu is my best knife for makin fuzz sticks, however my BlackJack Grunt comes a close second......both in front of my Koster nessie with it's scandi grind.....maybe it's just me ?

Ya, it's just you. You don't know what your talking about.

OP: I'm joking of course. I've never use a swamprat or blackjack, so... I just know a scandi grind does fuzz sticks for me, much better, than any of my Bucks, Leatherman, or pocket knives.

My best one for that is actually one I made...really straight edge, sort of a cross between scandi and convex grinds. Very slightly convex, but really just a scandi grind done by hand. The total lack of belly makes for very wide, thin curls.

I try to get each seperate cut to give me a few complete loops. I see a lot of fuzz sticks pictured that I wouln't be very happy with, to be honest. I like paper thin curls that wrap around and around...now those will go up with minimal effort.

Pencile sharpener, Works great for me. I pick up some sticks while walking and when im ready i got all the Fuzz i want in less then 15sec. Or just a sharp Mora..

I like the bomb proof, thick knives as well. But every since I started Urban EDC'ing my little Opinel #8 I keep thing what a great compliment this thin sharp blade would make with my 0.25" survival blade.

The carbon blade has a really nice patina on it now and its small size and blade profile let you peel as thin a slice off the stick as you like. First knife I've been able to get to push cut newsprint. Only problem with it is the succeptibility of the handle to moisture.

Well most chisels only have 1 bevel, so I'd say scandi grind.

I've used many moras and had no problems making feather sticks with them.

Sharp Helle will curl, and curl, an' curl...heck, if you keep your fiskars sharp enough it should be able to create fuzz sticks from 1 1/2"-3" sticks IME.

Any sharp knife :) I personally like convex better than scandi:

Koster Nessie, high flat grind with my own convex secondary:

Bark River Aurora, my own polished convex edge:

Even a thick ass SY Yard Keeper LE, with my own convex edge:

Sharp is the key, but I still find a convex does better for me personally than a scandi.

Thanks you too. I don't have any actuall pics of the OHT whittling but I have made many fires with it.

A nice thin flat grind. SAK's do well, some Spyderco's (Caly's), Cold Steel Trailguides are exceptional at this also.

Fallkniven F-1 made the thinnest shavings of any knife I have owned.

My Mora 510 probably does the best job out of all of the knives that I've used for making shavings and fuzz sticks. Thiner blades with scandi or flat grinds will probably work best, but just about any knife should be serviceable for fire prep tasks. I've used nothing but a hatchet before just to see if I could, and it made shavings just as well as a lot of my knives.

Brian you and Bear put up some sweet photos! Nice job guys, plus it showed what a nice convex grind on a blade is capable of. I'm impressed with your sharpening skills Brian, still have to master the convex sharpening skill on my BM grip. Bear, I thought i was the only one who liked to mess around making match fuzz sticks and then torch them off with a firesteel!

The best fuzz stick maker that I have used as of late is my new
orange handled Pathfinder:D. It has a blade length 5 inchs made of O-1
3/16 ths thick and is flat ground and slices like there is no tommarow.
The stick in the pic is Birch and nicely seasoned Birch makes some of the
best fuzz sticks I think Birch carves so good that I use it alot for making
up fuzz sticks for my fires. Along with few strips of shreaded up Birch bark and my
orange handled firesteel that is in the pic on the sheath makes for
a very quick fire. Here are the pics
