Best Fuzz-stick knife

Okay, I think you maniacs have me hooked. I couldn't stand it any longer last night, so I got some matches from the kitchen and started whittling the match sticks with my Buck 110. I think I'm ready to graduate to bigger sticks.

Another thing to think about, besides the best knife for making these things, is the best wood to use, my favorite is tulip poplar...I'll settle for some fat pine though;)

As somebody who lives in a rainforest that wouldn't always be overkill! Up at Cape Scott, which is REALLY, REALLY wet, all year long, I have had to make similar sticks to get fires going, no kidding.

I note that one of those cheap throwaway toolbox knives the moras performed pretty well there...!

I'm betting he made the fuzz stick with a Busse and then just stuck the cheap Mora in the pic as a laugh !!!:D

LOL!!!

When I've had to do that kind of extreme fire prep is generally on the one or two hundredth day of pouring rain in a row, in the northern coastal forests. Standing deadwood up there just rots in place, often the wood is so wet that four inches into the tree, you can still squeeze water out with your hand, because it's gotten heavy rain 9 days out of ten, forever!

Those are some pretty tough conditions for firelighting and even with extended preps it's not very easy, there is so much water in the wood that a ton of the heat that would ordinarily transfer to the other wood just gets blown drying the wood out as it tries to ignite...can be frustrating!

Pitdog. How are you liking the Diamondback? I picked up one of each size but haven't taken them out yet. I remember you were going to use yours as a pack/back-up knife. Looks like its getting some exercise.

Thanks.

My Mora does well on that. I just need the right wood to make pretty ones. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Hi all bear the dog wanted to read this thread again so here you go.
Any body been praticing?

Here's my attempt, my knife was kind of dull so it was hard to get good curls.
