Does anyone have suggestions for a decent gas forge for bladesmithing? I have been using coal, but would like to switch to a gas forge, and I have no idea where to start?

Which model is it? Just "knifemaker forge"? Will the opening be big enough for pattern welding later on when I learn or will I most likely need to get another forge?

I have to say that I was really amazed at how easy they are to make. It was kind of intimidating at first because I'm really not very handy.

You could make one a lot cheaper

Check out Indian Georges web site he has a tutorial that works nice.

Good luck with whatever you choose

I just built a new forge a month or so ago. Venturi burner, 13 inches of 6 inch pipe, two round 3 3/4 inch holes at both ends (my back I plug with a peice of soft firebrick cut to fit the hole), 1 inch layer of wool, Satanite, itc-100, Mizzou floor. With a little welding it's surprisingly easy to build cost around $100 in burner and refractories all from Darren Ellis. At 1psi it runs at 1550deg and 2300deg at 12psi. That's my two cents.

You'll probably want more than one.

I've had a NC Whisper Momma for close to 10 years and it's been a great forge, been used hard and still looks almost new inside and out. I do not and will not use flux in it.

I built a vertical Don Fogg style for pattern welding over 10 years ago, best damascus forge out of at least a dozen I've ever used. It's pretty much flux proof. Also great for heat treating.

Chili Forge make a super line of forges also, have seen them in use and was really impressed!
